Heisler
Actually I don't have any problem with this. If he gets what he is asking then more power to him. I did over hear a conversation from between Reaper folks about someone making an online order for upwards of 20 Sophies though. I would suspect that next year what you can buy online will be much more restricted. As for someone that didn't manage to buy it two weeks ago, well there is always something that comes up and can keep you away from the computer when you need it most. Yes, they certainly have to pay a premium now to get the piece, but I see no reason to chastise them because they forgot (easy to do when you have a house full of kids, I know all about that one), or could not access the internet for one reason or another. Once those Sophies are out the door Reaper certainly has no control over them and as a very limited, rather exclusive miniature its going to continue to command a fairly high price. Especially if Reaper Con continues to grow and or becomes better known.
Kheprera
If ReaperCon grows any more, they'll either need a bigger facility, have to hold for more than three days, and/or will have to move it off premises into a hotel. It can happen. I could see ReaperCon becoming a major con in the area and bringing in upwards of 2500 people. Easy.
Heisler
I guess that would be up to the Reaper folks, lol. The expense of running a convention in hotel is fairly high and I think they have a ways to go before that happens. 2500 is a huge figure too Genghis Con topped 2000 people twice and has been around 27 years, The three or four west coast conventions are about that 2500 size then its Origins and Gencon (I don't count Dragoncon or the San Diego Comic Con since they are not pure game conventions). But its a cool dream.
neshenti
Anyone who buys it now on eBay could have just as easily bought it for $10 online from Reaper during the con. There was no need for a friend to bring one home to anyone. They were for sale on the Reaper website to everyone during the Con.Anyone who shells out $40-$50 for one now almost deserves to get ripped off, since 2 weeks ago they could have bought 4-5 Sophies for that price! Agreed; I recall that too. Hence the addage: "There's a sucker born every minute." :-) -Tom
eastman
I brought home an extra 12 of the RCon Sophies this year - 6 for me and 6 for some friends who couldn't go. I don't plan on putting any of them on ebay either. Someone selling the Sophies on ebay doesn't really bother me. Someone using the gallery pictures of Amy's Sophie - without crediting the painter and almost certainly without asking permission to use the photo - that does bother me a bit. How much are you willing to pay? $40 is what a year one Sophie has sold for, I'm not sure about last years.

Gus Landt
So, you don't know anyone going to the convention and for what ever reason you are unable to get online during the convention weekend to order you Sophie. How much are you willing to pay? $40 is what a year one Sophie has sold for, I'm not sure about last years. I'd call up Reaper, or at least shoot them an email, and explain that I might not be able to get online to order one during the con, and could they please hold one for me. I'd bet Jay would be happy to take care of a Reaper Fanboy like that. IIRC though, the Sophie was for sale online for nearly 4 days. Seeing as how many people are bidding on these Sophies on eBay, I have to wonder how could that many people have things come up that kept them from 5 minutes on a computer for 4 days straight. The fact that they are bidding on it on eBay proves they have internet access. The fact that they are bidding so much on a Reapercon Sophie proves they know who Reaper is and what a ReaperCon is. Anyway, I'm not bothered at all by any of it. I love the fact that America is driven by comercialism. Lord knows I've spent $60,000+ on gaming stuff in the past 10 years. I just have to shake my head at the situation and feel sorry for the people getting fleeced and the unscrupulous seller who would use Amy's picture and not credit her. Reaper User Vaitalla Posted May 22, 2006 Reaper User Share Posted May 22, 2006 You will be pleased to know that our Reaper Enforcer is going to intervene and request that he remove the painted Sophie pic from his auction, as he does not have permission to use it. Might take a day or two, but hopefully we'll see results. --Anne, who hates unethical photo-snatchers
Heisler
It occurs to me after reading my posts here that some folks might think these auctions are mine. They are not. I do have six Sophies and plans for everyone one of them.
Qwyksilver
Never thought that for a second Heisler honestly. I personally don't have a problem with him/her selling them on EBay for a profit either. If people are willing to pay money for them, so be it. It's the nature of a free enterprise system. Reaper decided to make them available to the general public during the weekend of the Con, this is one of the results of that happening. Is it really any different than someone going and buying 10 of them in person at the Asylum that weekend and doing the same thing? Sure, an online purchase is a little less anonymous, but no less possible. Reaper got their money for the sale. They have no control over further markup due to an auction. If someone had lifted a bunch that would be different. It's too bad that someone couldn't get that Sophie by ordering it on their own for like $10 or however much she was selling for, but the price you pay for not getting a limited edition item when it was first available is the risk of a tremendous mark-up. For starters, maybe someone likes Sophies, but doesn't follow Reaper's site, and didn't even know about the Con, but saw a LIMITED EDITION SOPHIE auction and spewed fanboy funds. It does kind of reduce the special edition aspect of the item for those of us that went to the Con and got it, knowing that people can just go and snag a ton of them online that same weekend. It kind of reduces the exclusive nature of it for folks that went there to get it in person. That's an entirely different issue though, and one as equally heated as people that want a Sophie, but cannot get there for whatever reason. Once you open the door, it's hard to regulate where and how many sales there are. I do certainly feel bad though if people are seeing the gorgeous Sophie painted by Amy, and think they are bidding on that. I mean, hell, if I saw THAT Sophie on Ebay for $40 I'd buy it in a heartbeat too.
