slidedog
Here's a pair of Dwarves I did for a *gasp* GW store competition. I did the Lord in NMM and the Mechanic with straight metallics. Thought it was an interesting comparison, what do you all think? Which one comes off better? I could only enter one of them and the manager at this store said his staff are not fans of NMM so I entered the Mechanic and won the comp. This was for the Book of Grudges contest, thus the books. Let's hear those comments and suggestions, don't worry about hurting my feelings, I have a pretty thick skin at this point, but I am always looking for ways to improve. Adenosine
NICE! Good solid work bro! I am digging both of them. But if I had to choose it would the Mechanic. I like metallic's myself. Either due to the fact that I am still concerned with my skill level with moving onto NMM, Or I am just still intrigued by how if one tries that metallic's come out nice. Just my 2 cents..... Redhandstudios
I like the mechanic better personally, dwarves need shiney metal!
Naughty Tentacle Monster
You know how to pull off both styles with good skill. Personally I dig metals, so I would vote for the Engineer, but the Thane is very solid and well executed as well. If you were entering a Daemon, I would pick the Thane, as NMMs seem to still be popular. -NTM
axegrrl
I vote for the mechanic with the metallics. I can't be certain which areas on the lord are supposed to be metallics. The areas that I think are supposed to be NMM on the other piece need higher highlights and darker shadows to make it more obvious that they're supposed to be metallics. Personal gut feeling: I suspect the guys at the shop don't like NMM partly because they see soooo much *bad* NMM. Yours is far from bad! It's not yet to the point where you see the pic and say "hunh...is that metallic or NMM?" And I think you have to get to that point to win over judges who don't like NMM. paleskin
I actually think the two styles are right for the individual figures, bright and shiny metallic engineer type and doughty, solid, unswerving lordly type
fieldarchy
Personally I like both of them for different reasons. The NMM and metallic work on these models looks really nice. I think it depends on whether or not someone is good at NMM or metallics. I think I am better at NMM than metallics but sometimes the metallics looks better than NMM due to color schemes, ability to shade/highlight, etc. Good job. Congrats on the competition and keep up the good work.
Jabberwocky
Both are very, very well done. I am a metallics guy in general, but putting that preference aside, I still think the mechanic is better. Strictly speaking, I think both the metallics and NMM could use one more layer of highlights, taking the gold up to say a linen white and the metallics (in some spots) up to a white metallic. The bolts/studs are there, but I think the upper tips of the gears could use an additional highlight as well as the upper edge of the hammer. I think what sells the mechanic over the thane is the contrast. The gold of the thane is very well done, but to my eye blends a bit with the warm brown of the beard. Other random critiques--the book of the mechanic I think could use an additional highlight. I think the bases should be done in something different than the brown you have chosen, but that obviously is personal preference. There you go--no holds barred on the critiques. Congratulations on the win. It is well deserved!
Madzerker
NMM is my favorite of the two, nice job!
slidedog
Thanks for all of the input, good points all. I definately need to work the NMM guy as bit more, harder lining to separate the beard from the gold a bit more, the tones are too close. And bring up the highlights to white. I appreciate everybody's thoughts, it helps to get an outside perspective after you've been staring at one for just too long.
