I've read the whole series and think it's the best fantasy lit out there right now. Period. New Paragraph.

I picked up the Game of Thrones rulebook and like a lot of what I've read of it. You can put characters in the storyline or just use Westeros as your world if you like. It is very specific; there are only humans in this world, and no magic like in the D&D milieu.

Combat is deadlier, with fewer hit points; if you want to cleave through hordes of Orcs, stick with 3.5. If you want a game where your wits can save you as readily as your sword, and in a setting this rich, then go for it.

Sadly my roleplaying night crew is too long in the tooth to try anything new, and it's more about cold beer and killin' monsters. The Game of Thrones RPG is for ROLE players more than ROLL players.

Hope that sheds some light. Bang for your buck it is expensive, but man, it runs deep into the background, and offers all the mechanics needed, even having blocks of text to show the subtle differences to the core mechanics. Good artwork too.

Can't wait for the next novel! I've lost lots of sleep with George R.R. Martin's series. Lookin' forward to more insomnia next year when the Dance with Dragons comes out.

Cheers.

I love the novels. I've been interested in checking out the RPG, but the rulebook is pretty pricey. Glad to hear some good feedback on it. Might be worth checking out. I like the sounds of the low magic and need to play smart. Will have to look at it in a bit more detail.

I too recently started reading the series. It's very good. The RPG book is heavy and only 50 bucks, so I say you get a lot. It's OGL which is different from d20, and yet similar. One potential problem with the RPG is that, according to a thread in the Freelancer forum on rpg.net, none of the artists have been paid and Guardians of Order are in trouble financially. That may turn out not to mean much but it could interfere with any new material.

Westeros, a skirmish scale tabletop minis game is coming out in October. It was written by Andy Chambers of GW and Starship Troopers fame and James Ward who has done a lot of work in the D&D and gaming industry. Thunderbolt miniatures is doing a lot of the minis and some can be found on their website.

The D20 RPG book is simply the nicest looking book I have ever seen.

Or are you referring to the GoT strategy/boardgame?

I was actually more interested in the board game or Trading card game, but i appreciate the RPG info as well.

yes, i have just started the book as well, and i hear it's gone beyond the trilogy.

i am on book one, yet i am not far: i find each chapter very well written, but though they are well thought out and very deep, i find the writing style kinda dry...i mean, he writes like i do, and i ain't published yet...

the part with the direwolf pupls was cool, very thick foreshadows....

cool news on the RPG....

I have read the first two novels and thought they were excellent. Everytime I thought about putting them down to read somethingh else something in the story would grab me. I am trying to read some of the other books I have before I get the third book. I had read somewhere that the series was going to be a total of seven books. Has that changed? I really would hate to see this series go the way of The Wheel of Time.

I have the RPG, but have not played it. The RPG book has to be one of the best looking RPG books in a long time.

I think it's better writing than The Wheel of Time, but I'm readin' that again waiting for George R.R. Martin to deliver the next installment.

I got so fed up with the Wheel series that I stopped somewhere in book five. Recent poor health had me finish it, so I figure I'll just keep going. I've invested enough time and money, and I do want to see how it wraps up, even if it ain't as good as the Game of Thrones books.

I'm hoping Martin doesn't drag it out for eleven books, but with all those plot lines, he could smoke that number by far. Hm.

For what it's worth, J.R.R. Martin has stated many times that he "has other stories to tell" - the Song of Ice and Fire (though it's grown larger than he intended) will be ending in a few more books.

As for me, I love the books - read them and love them still.

Board Game - no useful information to provide

Trading Card Game - it's actually the only one that I have ever played "because I wanted to" and not because "my friends were also playing it" - I am not a TCG kind of person, but I do like this one quite a bit.

RPG - Expensive book, lots of changes to the d20 system (some good, some cumbersome, all of them in line with the "gritty feel" of the setting), great material in general. Difficult to maintain a campaign in (unless your group has experience running low magic, "gritty" quasi-historical games with few to no monsters or dungeons to fall back on) the setting. It is still one of my favorite RPG supplements, not one of my favorite settings to run games in - though my players all love playing in it - it's quite an administrative and GMing headache to do well.

In closing... We Do Not Sow.
