Sapphire Brushes

I bought some Sapphire brushes by Robert Simmons today. It's a sable/synth blend. They are very nice!! Anyone else try these out? I was just curious about performance and general lifetime. I normally use Loew & Cornell synths, but they're crapping out. I never expected them to last long anyways.

Also, does anyone know where I can get Sable brushes? Besides Reaper, obviously. I mean more not on the internet. I didn't see anything that stuck out to me at Michael's.

I just figure that with shipping, shopping online vs. store shopping evens out if I'm testing brands (I.E. buying one brush to test).

See if there is a local art store that stocks Windsor & Newton Series 7..might be more expensive than getting them from Dick Blick online but you said not online so there's my input

BTW, thanks! I never heard of Dick Blick online. I'll have to check them out. ^_^

At my nearby Michael's there were some low end Winsor and Newton sable brushes in the rack. I picked up one as a test travel brush and was quite disappointed especially when comparing it to a Series 7. The brush just felt very soft and had almost no spring.

Dick Blick shipping is a little painful ($8 or so for up to $30 of merchandise), but their prices on Series 7 brushes are really good, so buying from Dick Blick can be worthwhile if you group orders a bit rather than buying a brush at a time.

If you are going to get something from Dick Blick, you should also consider one of their porcelein palettes.

And, just as a quick note, I've never had a problem when ordering brushes from either Dick Blick or italianartstore.com (where I get my beloved DaVincis). They always come neaty inserted in a long plastic baggie with tube-ules (bristle protectors!) intact. :;): Though of course it's best to be able to pick out brushes in person, it's nice to know that at least a few online distributors take the trouble to preserve the expensive stuff!

My most recent Winsor & Newton Series 7 order from Dick Blick came with bristle protectors on the brush *AND* the entire brush in a larger, brush sized tube. Pretty nifty change from 6 months ago (when I just got the bristle protectors with multiple brushes in a baggie.

*Arise old thread!*

I just got an order from Dick Blick and the brushes were in tubes, with bristle protectors and wrapped in cardboard for shipping. Pretty darn secure.

I figgered that there might be people with holiday cash to spend and questions about buying their brushes online.

Hi Anne,

Which DaVincis do you get? I know it's maestro, and I got one from dickblick once and I didn't like it as well as W&NS7 (although I did get a 10/0, which I think was a mistake for testing), but maybe I also got the wrong style. link to DaVinci Maestro List

thanks!

DaVinci Maestro, size 1. It's an incredibly versatile brush, a little longer and thinner than the Series 7's so it feathers like a dream, and I can do eyeballs with it even though it's huge. ::D: I also like the size 0, which is comparable to a Series 7 00 or a Reaper 0/5.

ok well i know this is a bit off but i had a question regaurding brushes.

i am looking at getting a new set since i have been using GW i mean i have done well with them but like everything they broke down so if you can refer a good set that would be great.

also one thing i am wondering is if you guys know of any brushs that are quight stiff i noticed at least for fine detail if the brush doesn't bend and fan too much it helps me but the only reason i had a brush that did that is its one of my crapped out GW and well that brush finally got to the point that i can't use it

Thanks
