at the point when the enemy is able to get into b2b with you, it wont matter if you have a 7 or 8 move. They will have charge. If you are within 6 inches you get point blank shooting. And if one of your archers gets tied up the other archers can shoot into b2b without making your tied up unit go shaken.

Oh -- I generally try to stay at least 14 inches away with my archers, and when the opposing forces breaks that, double moving through terrian to get my distance back.

update

Sorry for the double post. I lost. We played 1,000 points after all. His army was as follows:

Arzaphan

Railor x4

5 Breakers

41 Warriors

51 models, 5 cards

I had

Selwyn, 5 Archers, 2 Longthorns, Warrior with musician

Arnise (DF, LMA), Lysette (Lightning Bolt, Ice Shards x2), Death Seeker, 3 Breakers, Long thorn, Warrior

Merdth, 9 Warriors

Centaur

He ran down the in roughly a "U" Formation, with Arzaphan on point. When I resigned, he had killed most of Merdth's forces, Arnise's Forces, the Centaur and much of Selwyn's group. I was ahead on points - he had killed about 550 points of my models, and I had killed about 650 points of his, but almost all of my melee was either dead or out of line. I tried to escape my archers through his line, using a pair of heavy woods to get some distance. It might have worked if initiative had gone my way in either of two critical turns.

He had very good luck, IMHO, on his Dark Energy Rolls. I know that I killed about 7 Railors this game.

My MVPs were Arnise and the Centaur, with a mention going to Lysette. She killed a Railor twice, and 3 skeletons and a breaker. That's about her points

He had no MVPs, IMHO. Just a bunch of dead men walking. Perhaps front Railor along the left flank did more than most.

I did fail to stick to a small tactic I was planning on trying. Imagine the following situation:

E - Elf Warrior

L - Lysette

S - Skeletal Warrior

The first thing that happens is I let the warriors get into double charge range to the elf warriors, and they charge.

Crypt Legion turn:

L

EEEEEEEEE

SSSSSSSS

Elf Turn

EEEEEEEEE

SSSSSSSS L Zot

They only get a shaken token if they are in the area of effect of the spell.

I think that if you know you will be facing a swarm, you need to make sure your list is mean and lean. One possibility is Selwyn+LMA, 4xMeridh, 39xWarriors. You still have 5 30" ranged attacks with sure shot so the enemy will have the disadvantage of coming to you, but you will have 44 models vs 51 models - not bad.

Sticking with an archer version, I suggest taking 5 archers, 2 centaurs, Selwyn and everything else Warriors and Meridhs. Putting points anywhere else detracts from run 'n gun. The purpose of the meat shield is to stand there as long as possible (high DV, no attacks). The archers will do the killing. If you try to include a melee attack element, it will just make the meat shield crumble faster since now the enemy gets extra attacks in the form of defensive strikes. The centaurs are there to run behind the enemy and be an uncatchable nuisance.

You're right. That's better then. The warriors then can attack the remaining line, which is hopefully depleted by about two thirds.

From your description, it looked like that you had set him up right where you wanted him, and then BAM! He took a lightning bolt you-know-where!

That didn't turn the tide in your favor? Wow, I'm surprised. I know he almost double the models you did, but it sounds like the dice were hot for him and not so hot for you...

I'd never blame a loss on the dice -- when the cards are the things that killed me :;): Rich made the correct observation that I had both offensive and defensive melee units, and I probably should have had pure defensive. That was a conscience choice on my part, in an attempt to build an "all comers" company. Okay, that and I wanted to play with the new and improved breakers, deathseekers and Arnise.

I used the centaur as both a pain in the backside, and an Archer release. Twice, when he got a warrior in HTH with an archer, the centaur was able to run in (13" charge through woods), kill the offending warrior, and allow the archer to run. I did lose one archer to defensive strikes that way, but my odds were better with supported attacks.

The other purpose of centaurs is providing initiative cards. I need to paint up the other one...

if you werent dealing with a horde, then your list was fairly potent. But, obviously against a horde as stated the defensive ablities outweigh the offensive.

There is nothing wrong with bringing the updated breakers as they will have a decent defensive strike against the skellies, but the deathseekers wont really help in that environment.

So what would people like to see in additional Elven Warlords?

A master archer seems to be a gimmie.

I'd also like to see either a pure fighter or mage. I like Danithal well enough, but often feel slightly shortchanged in either fighting or magic.

I think it needs to be a mage warlord. The Darkspawn have one that is just brutal to face, and use good guys need a way to counterattack!! Give me an Elven mage warlord baby!! :bday:

Why not a Cleric/Druid style Warlord? Danithal may rule Amrithil, but who leads the guardians of the Vale?

It would be cool to see some more "wood elf" type models; not just a warlord, but perhaps a couple of troops too...not sure how to differentiate them. The best analogy I can make to what I'm thinking is LotR; the current warlord range is very rivendell, high elf type; a move into mirkwood elves or lothlorien elves would be cool, though it may not fit with the background, since the forest courts aren't helping. Could also go in the other direction, and have some relatively heavily armored elves.

I can't really see the Elves going into the heavily armored category, especially when there are already Crusaders and Overlords with Heavy Cavalry. I'd expect to see them with some lighter, skirmishing Cavalry like the Khamsin Raiders and IC Light Lancers, or another completely different route and some Centaur "Cavalry" with Raider, Woodrunner and Ridgerunner so a lot of terrain wouldn't impact them.

I'd expect Elves to continue their trend of being a high mobility, stick and move style of army.

I would not be surprised at all if they don't get some sort of Run-and-Gun SA for at least a solo or expensive Archer Soldier.

I'd say the best cavalry for elves would be either mounted archers, light skirmishers, or mounted rangers with raider.

Remember elves are the most ranger heavy faction in the game and already get forest strider and ridge runner naturally so if your an all elf player having either ability printed on the card would be useless only good for freelance armies not that there is any problem with that.
