Tannhauser
In my case, I don't use the plastic bases at all for my Overlords. Instead, I use bases from my Hirsts Arts molds that look like stone. This gave me enough space to work with in positioning the shields and the crossbowmen to make it look like they're hiding behind the shield or stepping out to take a shot. Basically, if you don't confine yourself to positioning the model in the slot, then you have enough space to work with to fit them both on there. I would still recommend painting them separately before putting the shield on the base.
