Craclaw (1.2)

In my case, I don't use the plastic bases at all for my Overlords. Instead, I use bases from my Hirsts Arts molds that look like stone. This gave me enough space to work with in positioning the shields and the crossbowmen to make it look like they're hiding behind the shield or stepping out to take a shot.

Basically, if you don't confine yourself to positioning the model in the slot, then you have enough space to work with to fit them both on there. I would still recommend painting them separately before putting the shield on the base.

I mounted mine to the base and I think they look fine. They're kind of in the corner of the base.

Ok I'm looking for a little help with my initial o'lords force. So far I've bought minis I thought looked cool and paid little attention to how they'd work in a force. So far I have:

Matisse

Ashcrypt

Andras

Arik

Kevis

Balthon

8 warriors

3 xbows

3 spears

Selthak

Speaking with people on the chat I've realized that many of these are not terribly good models to field in low point battles, so I'd like some help on where to take my force next.

My own plan is to first expand with

1st wave of reinforcements: Corvus and some additional xbows.

2nd wave: Chevy

3rd wave: more spears and some slaves

Is this sound? Any suggestions?

The only models you have that can't be fielded effectively in small games are Matisse and Selthak, and I've yet to field Kevis (with Ashkrypt and Arik in the force? No.). I'd swap waves 2 and 3. The Chevy is rarely effective without a troop of cavalry (and devastating with one...) no matter how cool he looks.

Oddly enough, my experiences have been the opposite. I've found a lone Chevy to be quite effective. First of all, you get another card in the deck for only 78pts. He's also fast and able to redeploy very easily. And, his psychological impact is amazing. In every game I've played with one, my opponent has either dedicated a significant (300+pts) part of his force to taking out the lone Chevy, or he avoids it like the plague. Basically, I've found the Chevy to be a great way to mess with my opponents' battle plans.

I personally wouldn't pick up Corvus, I'd pick up another Andras. Poudn for pound, one of the best Captains in the game. The other thing I'd pick up would be Iks and a bunch of slaves. Don't underestimate the ability to have 19 bondslaves acting as one. If nothing else they draw firestorms away from the warriors. :B):

Don't overlook Ymrilix, he can be devestating in low point games. As for the Chevie, well...I go back and forth. I don't think he's very effective in a low point game were you can only have 1. Put two or three together though and its a different story.

Oh I don't know, I've got a 1000 point Matisse list that rocks! Granted, he's half the points, but whenever you use a warlord at that level it's gonna be lopsided.

This would be my vote, Iks + 5 blisters of Bondslaves, and 2 Blisters of Bondslave Survivors. A very hefty investment to be sure, but a unit of 20 models can be super-intimidating, and 20 models for a mere 317 points is a bloody good deal when you are playing the numbers game, leaves you alot of room to field your Premium models without sacrificing model count. I reckon at the very least Iks + 3 blisters of bondslaves, which you could combpine with your 8 warriors would make a great start. Remember thar Ashkrypt and Zora have Mob/# so even when you don't want to bring out Iks you could add a few bondslaves to each of your units and Milk 'Do your Duty' for all it's worth.

Count Lorenth doesn't have a mounted elite to boss around. Maybe the Onyx Chev will have the option of being a Hero or Adept.

IMHO Overlords is becoming a difficult faction to play, especially, with the Warriors becoming adepts. Putting a list together seems more difficult that other factions. I am not judging too quickly. They are my second faction. I have had all the core releases for a long time. I am slowing adding the new releases. I'm eager to see the faction book and if any of their short comings are overcome with abilities or sublists. I like how they have several mages.

Mounted leaders don't have to have mounted Elites. With most Cleric spells coming in at 18 inches, and Cavalry models not having LOS blocked by Standard based models, there's no reason not to stick one in a troop and just have him chugging along on foot with a small detachment of soldier types for personal defense. He can still be effective on the Cavalry models and stay behind the lines a bit.
