Craclaw (1.2)

Recommended Posts

After my recent forrays with the Overlords , I'm fast becoming a fan of the Onyx Zephurs . They have to be the best cavalry in the game for their price and so effective if used correctly and a good cleric to keep them healthy helps . I've recently devasted Elves once and reptus twice as a flanking unit and archer killers . :B):

I have not had the opportunity to play the Zephyrs. I was holding out for the book this month before I bought them. I couldn't wait ::): . I need to assemble them and give 'em a test run. When they were first released, I took interest in them because of the #MA 2 and Cavarly combination. I wish the shield arm was like the Onyx Chev. I wanted to swap the arms with the extra Chev arm so the Zephyr could have the awesome Overlords shield ::(:

Used the Onyx Legion sublist last night, vs Qwyk.

Due to a variety of things, (my rolling, his rolling, my 7 yr old setting up the terrain, his new list) I whooped him good.

Hunter's Edge is awesome. The was one turn when it didn't affect things, where I buried his card only on the first flip only to have his card come up again, but except for that it rocked. I'll have to be a bit smarter about using it, since once I wanted Qwyk to go first, but left my Tactician cards in and ended up burying my own card first, but still very strong.

And I used Kevis! Matisse brought Arik and Kevis for a multiplicity of Life Transfers! And both mages kept hitting even the high MD heroes and leaders. (see previous parenthetical...)

It was ugly. I made a couple bad tactical decisions, that were compounded by terrain. Pete rolled very well and I didn't. I'm not going to make any excuses since I did screw up bad because I neglected some terrain issues when I tried to flank with Cavalry. I count this as payback for that 15 minute 1501 game we played last month where I couldn't roll less than an 8.

Hunter's Edge is a HUGE ability. Probably the best addition to the Overlords. There were several occasions where my first activation would have meant some hurt on Pete, but he was able to bury my card.

The kicker is that by burying it, sure I might go last, but there's a good chance if he focuses his fire, he can wipe out a troop before it could have activated. Which did happen.

Definitely make use of adding and removing your Tactician cards every turn to take full advantage of Hunter's Edge. If you are planning to bury your own card, all you are doing is burying a Tactician, which means nothing.

Once the battle got underway, you know the first card of yours drawn is going to be buried, unless there is a big tactical advantage not to.

This isn't going to be super effective against a huge mob based army with tons of cards in the deck, but if you're playing armies with low initiative card counts <cough> like Crusaders <cough> it is brutal.

sounds like good crunchy fun. . .poor good guys. my overlord additions, unfortunately, will have to wait until the new year. then i can stop doing the "tactical redeployment" technique so often employed by the elves.

I was looking at the Overlords solos today, and I noticed that the Onyx Golem has SA:360, but not Warmaster. What is the purpose of having 360 without Warmaster on a solo? I can understand the reasoning on a grunt, but not solo.

Wild Bill :blues:

P.S. Plus, does the sculpt remind anyone else of Bender from Futurama?

No bonuses for attacks on a rear side. Warmaster would have made the Golem a real sweeeeeeeet solo. I would trade 360 for Warmaster ::):

My copy of the Overlords book just came in the mail today, along with my Zephyrs, Chevy, and the Count. ::D:

My one complaint, and it is only a minor one, is that in the Onyx Legion sublist only the Phalanx and Merak can lock shields. It would have been awesome to have all the heavies marching across the field ignoring ranged attacks. But then I guess that would just be wrong, but their Overlords and wrong is what they do best, right?

Boy is the "Hunter's Moon" one sweet faction ability for the Onyx Legion . While I won't say it determined todays games , it certainly had a big influence . :B):

A smart player can gain a huge advantage using this ability right. A smart, patient player... :B):

This is one way to neutralize Aysa - have the crossbows always activate last in a turn to knock down the Spectral Minions just before they get their Action Phase...

Depends on what list you're playing. If you're playing the Onyx Legion, Hedassa and her mob cultists would provide a good swarm unit in a very "quality over quantity" based army.

If you're playing Default or Followers of Khardullis, the Dark Dwarves would provide a good high DV unit (albeit an expensive one) to supplement the loss of the Overlord Warriors as grunts to everyone but the Onyx Legion.

The Thugs are a cheap (for what you get) 2 MA unit, but ranged fire will shread them.

If you're hurting for range, Rod and his pirates are a great addition. Throw Jos Gebblar (because good ol' Blackreef can take an elite) in there as well and that makes a really nasty unit. Though, in my opinion, the Overlord Crossbows are a better choice for non-magic range with their Ranked ability.

Really it's all a matter of complimenting what your army is lacking or to suit your personal tastes. I play primarily the Onyx Legion and I fully intead to grab Rod and at least 4 Pirates and maybe some Thugs.

You guys are using Strach, right?

I was just perusing the Overlord stats and stumbled upon him. I think he's great! I hope people don't overlook him for his low CP. For 66 points he has stats that are very similar to the Dwarves' hero Durgam Deepmug (who is at 68 points).. actually, extremely similar. There's some SA differences. So while you save two points you also get Mage 2/4 and CP 3! I think this guy is one of the better hybrids I've come across. CP 3 isn't a sure hit at all, but throw a 10 point Ice on him and it's not a big deal if he misses. Better yet throw Bolt or Venom on him, and he can strike back at mages and archers who target him. After his spells are gone he is an excellent fighter, so he's not dead points!

I haven't used him yet (since I haven't painted a new OL in forever...), but that's exactly how I use fighter/mages. Tack a Bolt on to deter archery, and basically treat him like a fighter.
