I like to bring Ssudai with a firestorm, 3 iceshards, and a lesser magic upgrade. This way he kicks butt with his magic, but he isn't too much of a point sink. I figure if he ends up in a fist fight before he runs out of spells then my grunts really aren't doing their job. Then again I typically have a whole pile of grunts to defend juicy things like mages and clerics.

I think it would be a given that snakes would get venom. Doesn't seem like more of a bonus than the crimson knights got when the vampire sa's came out.

I find it is typically best to avoid euipment as much as possible. I can get a whole extra grunt for the same cost as your average upgrade. Unless you reeeeeally need the upgrade, then you probably shouldn't take it. A mage shouldn't be in a melee fight, so why try and juice him up so that he will win melee fights. Just bring a few extra grunts to cover his back, and don't let the enemy engage him. I find it is usually better to have a different model for each function insted of having big multi-purpose types. It's similar to how you would avoid multi-classing in D&D. You will get better quality (and there fore usefullness) out of a pure warrior than you will out of a warrior-sorcerer. If you want true power from your models at a reasonable cost, then you need focus on 1 aspect of that model and make it excel, and then ignore the rest in favor of improving others. (essentially it is a good idea to minmax your warlord models)

I don't even take the magic upgrade. CP 7 man! just roll. You'll kill stuff. Unless you face Nefsokar, which is a whole nuther ball game.

I typically bring my mages stock. Of course my mages are Ashkrypt and Arik the Inquisitor, so perhaps I should pity you lesser factions... <_<

For me, its usually to help against the archers (that can shoot over, around, or past the meat shields), not the grunts.

I'll agree with you there. A stock T'kay is still bad enough to bust heads without any silly upgrades. It's always great when my opponents rush the cleric and then get beat through the floor by that friendly little spell caster.

Weekend update.

Played the first game of the year today. It was really more of a demo with most of the slots filled by players who already play alot, but it was still fun. Was a 500 point game with 5 sides. Dwarves, corebook orcs, elves, overlords, and non-corebook reptus (i had 2 clutchlings and they aren't in the core list  ). The scenario was in a town with wide open streets surrounded by relatively close buildings. Each side had to go retrieve treasure. There were about 20 markers on the board, each with a number equating their worth on the bottom.

Here was my list.

-----------------------------------

Troop 1

.............................

Chai-uut

T'kay 3 bandages, 1 bless, lesser magic upgrade.

4 breakers

2 clutchlings

Troop 2

.............................

Audt

2 warriors

2 archers

This list was a departure from my usual style. Normally i would have some trolls because I like winnig initiative. I have also never used archers before. Finally, I would normally use mixed breakers and warriors instead of seperating them.

We usually do demos w/ only two troops, so I brought no trolls (turns out the overlord player had some chevies so my trolls would probly have been ok). I put the warriors with the archers with the idea of making sure that they had some sturdy body guards. The idea with the breakers was to take that spear support and cut right through any opposition.

The elves spent most of the game in one place so they didn't get much in the way of treasure, and they rolled bad so they didn't kill much either. The overlords went mostly unopposed so they really cleaned house with those chevies bringing in the treasure. The dwarves (one of the new players, a first timer but he has already bought an army so he will be back) spent most of their time manuevering to get off shots with their crossbows. He must been a yahtze-hammer player because he never once left formation (it was ok, nobody had brought a mage.) Me and the orcs got in the only real tussle.

The archers performed much better than expected dropping 3 or 4 bull orcs and a sgt. The clutchlings didn't get to do much in the way of running because they were with the slow-poke breakers, but they did do their reach support job very well.

I jumped the orcs as they were trying to leave the board (well actually he was jumping my other flank at the same time) and T'kay got dropped early in the melee after having used only 1 bandage. I would definatley have been better off with a pair of trolls. When it was all said and done both me and the orcs still had our captains, and I had both archers (the definate mvps). 1 bull orc was up at the end, and another made a tough roll after the fact when we counted points. I gave much better than I got (finished with nearly twice my opponents points) but I recovered no treasure and took heavy casualties (especially compared to the forces that never really got in a fight). I had a great time and played well but it was the overlords game in the end.

Edit: I should mention that once me and the orcs had killed eachother the dwarves showed up putting them in an excellent position to profit, and possibly win, if we could have played a few more rounds.(both the reptus and orc treasures were lying on the ground amongst the bodies). It was really quite the well executed move but we just ran out of time.

Just curious, Moosey, but are you posting your battle reports at reapergames.com as well as your best paintjobs. You may as well get credit for wins and your hard work. We Reptus need more faithful helping swing the BoP to Reptus green.

I haven't been posting my paint jobs, but I guess I should. I post all my battle reports that I can. The problem is that no one around here is Black-lightning and we mostly seem to play in homes, so my wins don't count for much. I always post them (as long as my opponent is registered, which is another problem in these parts) but they don't make much difference.

I'll start submitting paint jobs as of right now.

Edit: I put two minis up last night and I am now officially ranked 8th in tagarthos province. I won't let the fact that there are only 8 ranked players bother me ::D: . Once I take some more pictures I will put those up too.

I just painted the last reptus model I own. The only one left on the list is Nai-Cannon (yes, I said cannon, not kanon) and I haven't picked him up yet. This brings my total model points without spells and equipment to 2309, with the final paint job having been Ra'am.

Now that I have the little pit fighter painted I would love to hear how you guys use him. It would be a shame for such a cool model to get murdalized in his debut game. Give me a run down on your successes/failures with this guy.

First off, Moosey, congrats on finishing up painting. (are their ill side effects of running out of minis to paint?)

Pick up Nai-Kannon. He is a BEAST to paint. I am working on him right now and have about seven hours in and still feel like I am only half way there. His detail is Mind-numbing

Ra'am is a great mini both to paint and use (I'll try and get a pic up in show off soon). I like to use him as one of my fast attackers with clutchlings, Chai-Uut and back it all up with a River Troll. The bloodlust/2(Ra'am and Chai'Uut) and runner/2(Clutchlings) makes for a frightening charge. Ra'am is the crown jewel of this disposable troop. He is fast, tough and has warmaster making him both an offensive and defensive powerhouse. I have had great success with him this way b ut keep in mind that I use him in a suicide troop, so he usually ends up dead with 4+ kills to his name.
