I'm looking to order some goodies that I can't readily get here in Australia from the CoolMiniorNot store here  :

http://www.coolminiornot.com/store/section.php?xSec=13

Now, when I go to open an account, just under "Customer Login", something wierd happens. A little box pops up telling me something along the lines that "Website Certified By Unknown Authority" and that it's a security risk. This happens on both WE and Firefox. Does anyone who knows about this kinda thing have any idea if this is fine/bad/evil/irrelevant/etc.???

It's about the SSL (Secure Socket Layer). There are a few companies that "certify" that the business you are connected to is really the business you *think* you are connecting to. This certificate system adds another layer of protection b/w you and someone that steals the DNS of a website.

Out of habit, I don't purchase from sites that have expired certificates. If you do choose to complete the purchase, watch your credit card for suspect charges and/or use one of those credit cards that gives you a temporary unique card number so it can't be repeatedly used.

Make sense?

Basically if the certificate is not OK, you have absolutely no idea who you are infact sending your credit card info to. 99% of the time the site will be who they claim to be, but there really is no way to know if the certificate is not OK.

Also please note that anyone can issue a certificate, so you need to make sure you trust the issuer (or the issuer of the issuers certificate). This is all based on a chain of certificates leading back to a root certificate authority that "we all trust". Like "Verisign" for instance.

Digital signiature technology is also based on certificates (and other important bits and pieces).

It all boils down to trust. And if the site doesn't have a valid certificate you're taking a risk.

also note that it is common practice for sites to issue certificates to themselves. This ofcourse is completely useless. Don't trust it.

I also know that CMON just updated a great deal of things on their sight, including their shopping cart. You might want to e-mail the web master and let them know that the certificate is showing up expired. They may have forgotten to up date their certificate to their new shopping cart.

From what I've heard here (some time ago, however) and a little elsewhere, New Wave should be avoided at all costs, but the CMoN Store, which is New Wave affiliated, is for some reason okay.

Both used to be owned by the same guy, but when the guy got divorced, his wife got one of the businesses in the settlement. I don't remember who got what, but that's why one business runs fine and the other sucks.

I did a search and found this - http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?...&hl=divorce

Do a control+F to skip to the word 'divorce'. According to that guy, the reason New Wave sucks is b/c the wife got it in a divorce. I'm not sure I buy all of that though, b/c I know that New Wave's problems go way back before the divorce. People have had problems with them for years.

I've ordered many, many times from CMoN and have had no problems whatsoever.

The few problems I have seen (I'm a member over there) are usually addressed in one of the forums and handled by Borg very quickly.

All in all the service is good and if there is a problem it is handled swiftly, and professionally.
