anyone know of free or cheaper virtual desktop programs??

Recommended Posts

just curious if anyone knew of programs like Fantasy Grounds, but a tad bit cheaper or even better free.

http://fantasygrounds.com/ (this is Fantasy Grounds)

I like what I see, but the price is tad bit much for me + I'm not exactly sure on how players would sign in (do they need to purchase as well, YIKES!!)

if only I had to purchase & then everyone else I could just invite, I could go with that, but for now.

if anything online rpg programs would be great as well, epsically die rollers & other game related stuff

thanks

RM

Hey man.. I actually use Fantasy grounds, and I will tell you.. it is well worth the money. I have already created a ruleset for Deadlands, and I have one for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. It can be used for many other aspects as well, like Hero QUest, and Risk.. both of which I have custom rulesets for. If you want to see how it works, let me know. I have several keys, as well as the demo. I can answer almost any question you have about the program, as I have been using and modding it for a little over a year.

I Usually Use IRC and their Bot Scripting Programs. (Usually do Massive World of Darkness Play there, keeps dice rolls and if you get really ambitious you can keep track of things like gold amounts each character has, experience given out etc etc etc. But it takes a LOT of hand scripting for those bots and testing.

I am going to be downloading this very program at the end of the month...looks awesome, and I have several friends in a different city that are going to be getting the lite version...will let you know more from a neophyte standpoint as we get up and running with it.

now take these recommendations with a grain of salt - I haven't actually USED any of these programs, though when I was doing some research into these kinds of programs a while ago 2 of them caught my (rather frugal) eye

the first is screen monkey, which is basically a modified webserver, so you only buy the one program (about $35 I think) and the players can connect in with a web browser (and there's a free trial version you can download to make sure you don't have any problems with your network setup, or even use to run games if you don't need all the features in the full version)

the other is openRPG, which is an open source virtual tabletop program - it's not quite as pretty as some of the others, but it can do a lot and it's extendable with a bit of programming (I think it's written in python) and there's a lot of plugins for it around the web if you aren't into that

and here's some nice maps that really help upgrade the graphics

thanks for the suggestions guys

I think at a later date I might go with a program like this to run games & such, but for now for the Savage Tide game I want to run, I'll use the post method & such, but still everything sounds cool for something later on & such.

again thanks!!

You know, if you get me a pdf of the character sheet, I can probably get you a ruleset made, just in case you decide you want to use FG. Just an offer. Let me know.
