overlords army list

Apologies FF. I probably do sound a bit too much on the negative side. But, I have just as many if not more things to say on the positive side. Overlords has been my second army for a while now and the release of the book has done nothing to take away from that.

Just have to rework a few things as I did like using Lola and Rogran in just about every build I've had so far. But, I want to play the sublists too.

Since you are here, let me ask you a question or two:

1. The dominate spell is not very clear in the book wording. As long as I adhere to the spell restrictions (specifically the DIS7 restriction) can I dominate a spellcaster and have that model cast one of its own remaining spells?

2. The Warbrides SA inside the Khardullis sublist is also worded a bit confusing. Only because it is talking about warbrides and such, but no where does it say you actually have to add Moraia to your force list. In the fluff it mentions there being over a dozen warbrides, but Moraia is the only Overlord model with Warbride listed in the title. Are there others that could be included in the list that would suffice to take advantage of this SA?

Moraia is non-unique, so you can have piles of Moraia's running around.

And no, the Crossbowmen were never grunts. I was joking in the hopes that someone would flip out and I could laugh and laugh and laugh. In that I was severely disappointed.

PS

Storm,

I beg to differ on only one point. It says specifically, in the Onyx legion sublist, the Chevy can be used as a non-unique solo OR elite. Not AND. Therefore cannot be used as both at the same time.

Let's compare some wording:

Hospitaliers of Gianova

When fielding an all Crusader company the Crusader player must choose to feild any Hospitaliers as either Adepts or non unique Elite models. They may not be fielded as both Adepts and Elites in the same Fighting Company ...

Chevaliers

When the Zephyrs ride forth, the Chevaliers are rarely far behind. Chevaliers may be fielded as an Elite or a Solo choice in an Onyx Legion Sublist.

If they wanted the restrictive reading in the second case, don't you think they'd have used language similar to the first case? With words like "must" and "may not?"

No, no, I didn't think you were being too negative. Just pointing out a couple things I saw differently. :B):

Yes, as far as I know. It allows you to make a combat action, which would include firing off a spell.

You might very well be right, I just read the key word.. "choice" in there. elite or solo choice. Which to me infers either or not both.

Besides, *cough cough* I cant think of a single time when Reaper has had to go back and use better wording to clear up a misconception... he he he *cough*

Right now, you've got a default list. This gives you the faction abilities listed in the book.

You've got 2 models from the Followers of Khardullis list: Balthon and Moraia.

This sublist lets you field more Lorena models (she's normally unique), more Daughters of the Whip and Bondslave Survivors (normally Adepts), more Golems (normally unique) and lets your clerics cast a new spell Innately (i.e. without paying points for it). With the models you've got, you probably won't benefit much from this list.

You've got 1 model that isn't in either sublist: Ashkrypt.

All your other models can be used in either list.

You don't have the models to take full advantage of the Onyx Legion list.

I would recommend going Default until you increase your model collection.

Sooooooo, on to model recommendations.

If you want to play Followers, you should get Zora, the cleric Warlord, and great heaping piles of Bondslaves. A few Daughters of the Whip and Lorena models would be good, but a lower priority. A Ranthe or two would help, but you already have Balthon (an awesome cleric) so only get him if you really want a bunch of clerics.

If you want to play Onyx Legion, you'll need Merack and some Onyx Phalanx. Count Lorenth and some Onyx Zephyrs are a good investment as well. Since you can't use any of the elites you own in this sublist, you should get Arik (an awesome mage) and Kevis (a lesser but still good mage). Also General Matisse if your games go up to 1501 and you need a Warlord.

In any list, default or sub, you'll want some Corvus models, and maybe some spearmen, and probably Ymrilix. The Golem is fun, but a little tricky to use well, and Onyx Chevaliers are great when running along side a troop of Zephyrs.

I would concur with all of the above and add a few more points.

Chevaliers are cool, but I personally find them underpowered as solos. The only place I have been able to effectively use them is in an Onyx Legion list.

Matisse is usable at any level of game. Well within reason I guess, a 500 point game might be a little low for a Warlord model. Still he is a beast when pimped out with armor and weapons and I use him all the time in 1000 point games. Just don't be afraid to move him up and let him do the damage.

Arik is a must. Originally he was not a part of the Onyx legion list, but i like the addition. He is now in all 3 lists I believe, so very versatile.

Ymrilix is another must, I think. The dude is a pure killing machine and I use him in nearly every army list I play. Sad thing is, someone ripped mine off at the last con. Can you say distraught.

Followers of Khardullis...this is a tough list. The main reason is the shear number of models you need to paint. Gobs and gobs of bondslaves and survivors. Personally I like to mix troops with Lorena, 4 daughters and 10 Survivors.

Incarnation of Flame. I have used this ever since I got the model and it rocks. On the surface it seems lackluster statwise, but in practice it is very effective. Not to mention an awesome model.

Selthak the Poisoner...Sniper with poison. What more can you ask for?

I had not been a big fan of the overlord models, but looking at the now and with my new copy of the faction book on its way to me (as speedily as international post is) I am considering it now. Some of the models do look pretty cool and it might just be fun to try it out as something of a change.

hmm. where's those data cards..let me try a list....lol

Just picked up my Overlords book today. Very, very cool.

Default Overlords faction abilities have changed they are now as follows:

Do Your Duty

Fear the Whip

Lock Shields

Marquise's Personal Retinue

Anthony

Thanks for posting that info. I am having a tough time obtaining my book. What is "Marquise's Personal Retinue"?

My book is en route via UPS, but I can guess that it is probably similar to The Wolf and Judas's Crimson Knights: Matisse is allowed to field Overlord Warriors in his Troop as Grunts. If not this, probably something very similar.

Yeah, Zora gets Daughters of the Whip in her troop, like the Crimson Knights in Judas'.

This works in a default list. In the Followers list the Daughters are grunts, and in the Onyx list Daughters aren't allowed.
