duplicolor or krylon

hey guys i was wonderin gwhich white primer you reccomend duplicolor or krylon? which do you think is better for the money. i decided to get a few opinions on it. i just cant push myself to spend 10 dollars on tamia or citadel. any input? thanks a lot.

I haven't tried either one, but the opinions on the garage kit forum I'm on were about 4:1 in favor of Duplicolor Sandable auto primer over Krylon. Some of the garage kit instruction sheets mention using Duplicolor specifically.

 

Just remember -

 

Duplicolor Sandable Primer = good

Duplicolor Sandable Filler & Primer = not good

I like Duplicolor. Krylon is okay, and I'm using a can that I bought for testing for the minis that I'm doing for an upcoming paint and take. But, I find that Duplicolor goes on a bit smoother and is a little more forgiving of technique. Krylon is a touch cheaper, especially if you buy it at Michael's or Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon. But, given that the Duplicolor is $5 (with tax) while the Krylon is about $4.40 (with tax, no coupon), the difference is pretty miniscule.

 

The Duplicolor Sandable Primer is fine and comes in a number of colors. As eastman said, stay away from the filler version.

I've used Krylon without any complaints. So long as it's shaken well (I go for something in excess of 2 minutes) and you do the usual distance and light coats stuff, you should get acceptable results. The only time it's ever gone bad on me has been when I didn't follow good spraying practices, or if the can was basically dead and I used it anyway.

Kilz Kraftcoat (I think, I KNOW it's Kilz) has a flat black and a a flat white that are fantastic and CHEAP, thier grey primer is nice too.

Dupi over Krylon anyday!!!!

 

I use Dupi in my models & it can handle almost any paint that goes on top of it, not Krylon. Not that it matters with acrylics. Anther good thing is, Krylon stinks compared to Dupi so that is anther mark against it.

I get better results with Duplicolor than Krylon. It's smoother and doesn't tend to clog detail like the Krylon.

Before making the switch to Tamiya, I used Krylon. But only because I didn't know much about Duplicolor. I'm not even sure where I'd get it.

Auto parts stores. Most places don't carry every color though. For example, if I want white, I go to O'Rielly's since that's the only place that I've reliably found that color. Grey seems to be available everywhere though.

only place in town that sells Dupi white primer is either Schuck's Auto Supply or NAPA auto supply.

You can get Dupli Black at WalMart, but for White or Gray any auto parts store should do. I like Duplicolor over Krylon. I've used the Krylon plastic primer lately and it is very nice. Lots of colors to choose from and it is very smooth.

 

For white primer, it's a matter of cost over function. For my "best of best" models it's Tamiya Fine or ???? (can't remember ATM; little can, big price) ONLY. For mass production (armies, etc.) then I'll user Duplicolor or Krylon plastic. I would NOT recommend using regular Krylon white primer.

Second that. I bought some because I had seen people talking about Krylon white paint and thought they meant the primer. A store here had some of the Krylon primer on sale so I picked up a can and used it. Cripes! I wound up stripping 5 minis shortly after priming because of that stuff. Some places weren't even covered and what was covered was bumpy and uneven. There was no way I was going to get a smooth paint job with that.
