getting the yellow effect for polar bear fur?

Recommended Posts

I found a replica polar bear toy to use a dire polar bear for my 20th lvl druid's animal companion. The problem its' fur is pure white. Real polar bears get that slighly yellow fur look to them. What would be the best way to simulate this via paint?

Thanks!

Does the toy have sculpted fur? Or is it smooth?

If it's sculpted, you can give it a wash of ivory and then drybrush the fur with white again after the wash is dry.

If it's smooth, it would be more difficult, but probably could still be done. I'd probably paint the shadow areas with ivory and leave the rest white.

Yep it is sculpted. Great idea! Thanks.

Heyas - I did one a while back. If I recall correctly, I based it a bone color, and then gave it a really thinned down tan/light brown wash. Once that dried I drybrushed up the colors, and spent a little time blending black and brown around the nose and muzzle.

Hey, good luck with the polar bear fur. I did a mini with it once, and it was quite the adventure finding the right colours. Basically, I took Vallejo Ice Yellow as the base, then kept mixing it with white to get the lighter blends, a quick wash of a very slightly brownish colour (I don't remember what it was exactly, I think a Tan from the Vallejo line) and then the final highlights in pure White to finish it off. Here's a link of how it came out. Looking at it, I could now do a MUCH better job with the layers, but it was an early piece, so it's just nice to see i've progressed...
