Genghis Con XXVIII Painting Conference

A little bump to keep this active. I'm into countdown mode for the convention and the painting conference. The painting classes are filling up nicely, several are closed and I have registrations for Phil's "hidden" (ie they made the website but not the book) classes as well. So if you are thinking about it, stop thinking and register. Don't the painting competition, I was looking at some the people that have pre-registered to get their entries in and the competition is looking pretty good. I have also managed to track down the gentleman that cast our trophies last year in the nick of time so those will be given out again. I'm trying to talk the con into 2nd and 3rd place trophies as well, so get those entries finished!

When can we expect to see the pictures, Kris?

::P:

Well I have downloaded them to my machine and I'm in the process of cutting them down to a reasonable size. Mr Reed likes very Hi-Res shots, most of them are hovering just a tad over 1mb in size.

So they are in process of being resized to something a bit more reasonable. ::D:

BTW, Kris...

Thank you very much for organizing all those classes at Ghengis. I learned quite a bit from the classes I had with both Lili and Damien, and also a bit from Anne just by listening to her teach one of her classes at the same time I was in Lili's.

My only suggestions for next time -

1. If possible, more classes and more space for "open painting". That room was a bit crowded.

2. I would have gotten a lot more out of Lili's class if I had shown up with a mini or two that were already base-coated, instead of just primed. I wasted quite a bit of time getting a base coat on so I could practice the techniques she was teaching. I've learned my lesson, so it won't happen again - but for the next class descriptions, you might want to have better suggestions like this on materials needed to bring.

PS - when will we see Anne's "Workouts for painters" video? ::D:

Sorry, I'll have to get my instructors to give me more information on what they want folks to bring, usually they just want you to start with a primered figure.

Unfortunately Genghis Con is currently in a severe space crunch. We are operating out of hotel that is really just a bit small for us because our first choice of hotels is sold out for the next 2 years (actually we were in a meeting with our Sales manager and the General Manager discussing a possible long term contract when the other Sales person came in and brightly announced she had just sold it off for the next three years, let me tell ya if looks could kill she'd have died on the spot). Right now I'm trying to figure out room configurations and what will and won't work in a given space. We are using the largest room available to us right now and obviously what I had was not the best. However, it did do two things that I needed. One it got the display case for the contest right in front of the door where it could be seen by anyone walking by (by the way I need a bigger case ::D: ) and it helped restrict traffic flow into the room so I didn't have people wandering through and just watching the classes. So the basic requirements were met and the paint-n-take area suffered somewhat. My room at the Hyatt is at least 50% larger than the one I have now and worked out really well. Its probablem is that it is not in the main traffic flow for the convention and gets missed by those just wandering by, which is actually true of most of the rooms at the Hyatt, it has an interesting traffic flow and most of the space we use there is off the beaten path. So if you don't have a reason to go there you don't.

As far as the workout video, I'll throw that into Anne's court. ::D:

I heard about the Hyatt thing from Nathan on the DGA list yesterday. That _really_ annoys me, because my sister in law is in management there (though not that department). You can bet I'll be giving her an earful next time we get together (in about a week, actually).

One possible idea (don't know how practical it is at the Four Seasons, though), is to use the painting room as a mustering area, and actually hold the classes elsewhere - like a regular room where the door can be closed.

For Lili's Intermediate Blending class (that I was in), at least, I would suggest that the description say bring at least one primered mini and one with your base colors applied. But I'm a slow painter anyway - others didn't seem to have the issue.

some other thoughts -

- the old Pacificon (long since replaced by Conquest) used to put the miniatures contest at a table/display case in the Dealers room. Of course, they weren't holding painting classes, or paint-n-takes.

- the Con HQ really looked like a waste of space. I can understand why they were there - location, location, location, but it looked to me as if they could have got by with half that space. IIRC, it appeared that the divider between that room and the Painting area was movable - perhaps a future layout could utilize some of the Con HQ space?

We did use to have the miniature contest case in the exhibitors' area. We haven't had it in there in years. Space is at to much of a premium for the case to be in there and it splits up my limited supply of personel.

The configuration for the airwalls is as you saw it. The airwall could be opened up to create a bigger room by combining those rooms though. The Grand ballroom can be broken down into eight distinct sections however the size of those sections is fixed. Only specially designed convention halls have the flexibility to customize room sizes and even then that flexibility is limited to how the tracks for the airwalls are set so there are limits. To the best of my knowledge there is not a hotel in Denver that has this kind of flexibility. I might see if I can snag some of the space in Con HQ class though, that wouldn't be a bad idea, its pretty quite there for the most part, but it can also get pretty noisy in there as well. I'll have to think about it. Beyond that there isn't any other space available. Believe me I have tried, I do all of the floorplans for the convention.

OK, OK so they weren't web ready, that I'll admit. But starting from a higher res source, those photos are going to look good! Next time if you need me to run a script and down-res for web use, I can do that. Sorry to add to your work load!

I'll forgive you as long as your camera studio makes it to Tacticon! ::D:

And those pictures are going to look very good, no complaints from me, and having those pictures there Sunday afternoon when most of the entries were already gone was really nice. Everyone still got to see the winners that way.
