What a month, first GUSTAV and then IKE. I'll try to get something done on Saturday but I can't be sure I'll get a break, still a lot of work to get done. At least we have the internet again.

OK I finally have a couple days off so let's move on.

 

You search the house for only ten minutes before you realize that Susan has slipped in behind you. There is no power and the house is gloomy and cold. It has been ransacked. Things have been broken for the sake of destruction it seems. The house is two stories and has a basement as well.

 

"Arthur rarely used most of the rooms for more than storage or guest's staying over. He did the cooking and only really had time for the basement lab, his reading room and the tool shed where he kept the tools he used at the mound." says Susan.

 

You are in the house and a general search has turned up nothing. Consider the rolls made but that here is nothing new to find. You can leave or choose more specific targets. By the way thanks for the waiting, we are still putting things back together down here on the TX/LA border.

Ray stretches and sighs, "I think that the basement is our best shot at this point. As much as I hate delaying any longer I know that there has to be a clue here somewhere as to what Arthur got himself into. We should probably check out the tools as well just incase he put something there. Arthur had to have kept a notebook about his findings and what he was looking for. He was always meticulous about things like that."

"We seem to be thinking alike, Ray," Toth says. "I know we need to check the mound as soon as possible, but I have a feeling there's something here that will help us. Let's check the reading room as well. Lead the way, Susan."

Susan walks to an interior wall and removes a picture from the wall. Behind the picture is a little hole. Susan pushes her finger into the hole and there is a click. With a push she opens a door. The door moves smoothly and without noise.

 

She glances back and says, "There was a some very expensive artifacts in Arthur's collection. He let me into his lab on occasion to look at some of the rare books and things like that. We'll need flashlights but there will be candles and lanterns downstairs."

 

The lab is clean, a room perhaps twenty five foot square with a tall wooden table a stool next to it and a smaller table with chairs on either side. Shelves line the walls. Books, boxes and a collection of things ranging from rocks to lightbulbs are collected on the shelves. Using flashlights you find the candle holders and get som light going. Susan stands in the center of the room looking around lost in thought. There are books on the tables and on the stool is an envelope. It is at this moment that you hear shuffling steps somewhere upstairs. The door at the toop of the stairs is open.

"I think we have company, people. Make it fast," Toth says as he springs into action. He rushes up the stairs, shotgun at the ready, and closes the door, locking it if possible. Then he takes a position at the bottom of the stairs with his weapon leveled at the door.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I'll be out of town for the next 3-5 days, hopefully I'll be back around mid-week.

Ray crouches down in the shadows training his gun on the door.

 

"Let's just make sure of what we're shooting at," he whispers to the others. "No way to make friends by shooting at them and we don't know who is up there."

"I think we're the only friendly folks left around this place, Ray," Toth says with a grimace. "If it's more of those things, aim for the head."

As you close the door you catch a glimpse of one of the walking dead similar to what you had seen the night before. The door closes and locks. For perhaps ten minutes you can hear the shuffling steps.

 

"I think it's moved to the back of the house," says Susan. "We have some time to look around." She moves to a shelf and takes down a war club with a jade blade inserted at the end. Underneath is one of Arthur's journals.

 

Will you look around, make a break or have one look while the other keeps watch?

Ray motions to Toth to guard the door while indicating that he and Susan will make a quick search of the basement and gather what we can before getting our butts out of here.

Toth nods agreement, and settles himself at the bottom of the stairs, with eyes on the door and ears straining to catch the sounds of movement above.

What you find is the following:

 

1. Notes on a variety of artifacts that indicate that human cultures had contact with extra dimensional cultures. These contacts were hidden in Religous and mythological symbols. Though you might not agree with the conclusions three items are used repeatedly: circles used as portals such as Stonehenge and the legends of Fairy Circles, visions from above such as the Nazca Lines in Peru and "lost Civilizations" like Atlantis or Churchwards ramblings on Mu.

 

2. A fresh skull from a strange creature that none of you recognize though it has a reptilian look.

 

3. A list of explorer's gear that looks like items for the Tropics, and many to the items are still here in the basement. Machete, malaria treatment, bandages, matches, mosquito netting, a canvas tent, three canteens, spikes, 100 feet of thin rope, specimen bags, specimen jars, hand lens, all this gear in two back packs. What is missing is a rifle, two pistols and the ammo for these guns.

 

While Susan and Ray find and discuss these items Toth keeps an eye on the door. After fifteen minutes he hears scratching at the door, sounding perhaps as if someone were trying to find the latch. Then a startling smash as a fist slams into the door. It is holding for the moment but Toth could see the door rattle a little.

Looks like we're about to have company, Toth observes grimly. "Susan? Is there another way out of here," he asks as he levels the shotgun, ready to blow the first thing through the door to kingdom come.
