Unspeakable Journeys

Recommended Posts

Ray, Toth and two townsmen circle the house. The area is well lit and the snow is untouched and perhaps six inches deep in the side yards. But the back of the house is a different story. The snow is disturbed and it seems as if there has been some foot traffic. But all attention is drawn to a figure laying in the yard. There are dark stains in the snow near the figure but there is an unnatural look to the shape.

Will you investigate? The two townsfolk have begun moving toward the porch, away from the figure. "We need to tell the Sheriff, it looks like loony old Bill kilt someone there."

Vincent watches as the party splits. One groupp heading for the door and another working on circling the house. Letting both Ray and Toth start off ahead of him he takes a quick look at his watch noting the time. He grabs his pistol handle again for comfort more then anything else for the mound people rattled something inside of him tonight. Letting go he cautiously follows Ray and Toth.

Taking a quick glance around into the gloo surrounding them, Ray eases in towards the body very cautiously. Checking the stained snow he makes sure that the blood is coming from the dead man. Drawing nearer he scans over th ebody thoroughly noting the angle of his limbs and body positioning. "Something just doesn't feel right here," he mutters.

Toth inches carefully up to the body as well, making sure to disturb as little as possible. "Run and get the sheriff, but stay away from the body," he tells the townsfolk. Then he begins to examine the scene, pouring over every detail, trying to get some sense of what happened here. "This doesn't look good, Ray," he says in a hushed tone. "This doesn't look good at all."

The townsfolk are happy to go and tell the Sheriff, they pass Vincent on the way. There is a charnel stink in the air as you approach the body. Sanity Roll occurs, all pass, as everyone is there I will use and all inclusive you for this narrative. You notice first that the body is wearing strange rags for clothing, then that the knees bend in the wrong direction, then that there is too much hair, then that the fingers end in talons and then that the face is nothing human and then you have to look away for a moment.

You notice that the creatures feet are human enough and that unless this was a very busy creature there are too many tracks to have been left by the one lying here dead. And from the hole in the beast's chest it is dead, no doubt. There is not much blood, some but not as much as a human would have. And you also notice that the creature has a weapon, a knife, lying near an outstretched hand.

It is a little after 10:00 pm at this stage and the Sheriff comes around the corner with Old Bill and most of the rest of the posse. You hear Old Bill say, "I was pertecktin my own self, I didn't ask no Mound Beast to dinner ya know. The things was follerin some folks I let into my house."

The group approaches apparently without thought to the crime scene.

"Watch where you step!" Toth warns the approaching group. "You might unwittingly destroy a vital bit of information."

He maneuvers himself around and trains his light on the knife, studying it closely. He takes a small notepad from his jacket pocket and makes a quick sketch of the creature and the knife. Then he stands and looks at Old Bill. "Who were the people you let into your house, sir, and where are they now?"

My god! Things like this shouldn't exist, outside of fairy-stories!

Making his way to Toth and Ray, Vincent takes a fast glance down at the corpse. Doing a triple take he looks over at the two and scratches his head. He then takes another look dwon carefully inspecting the corpse. Thinking to himself, "Hmmm mound people???????????????"

Vincent then moves away from where Toth and Ray making note not to diisturbe anything in the area he starts to take a closer look at the ground, looking around for tracks, evidence of a scuffle, or anything that may be in the area as well as anything that might appear out of the ordinary. Hearing Toth ask, " Who were the people you let into your house, sir, and where are they now?", Vincent pays particular attention to the answer.

Seeing that Toth and Vincent have the questions heading in the right direction, he sees if he can get a set of tracks that haven't been too disturbed and heading away fron the house. "It's time to see which direction the nightmare is coming from this time," he mumbles to himself.

Most of the group stops, with the exception of Old Bill and Sheriff Whitford. They carefully approach and shine a light down on the creature. "I done tol you it weren't human Mr. High and Mighty Sheriff Whitford," says Bill with a tone of triumph.

Though pale the Sheriff seems to be handling the sight well enough. "Answer the man's question Bill. Who do you have in the house?"

"Don't quite know who they is...let's go ask um." is Bill's reply.

Searching the ground shows a path of prints, apparently running and in boots approaching the house and then up onto the porch. The trail comes in from the north. Glancing up, along the trail you see the tracks come from and the beast tracks depart across open fields. There are no houses or structures visible to the north. It looks as if normal boot wearing figures had fled from clawed creatures. The disturbing thing now is the evidence that more than one of the creatures was in pursuit and that there are creatures out there in the darkness ... watching.

Most of the posse is now gravitating toward Old Bill's House. Mumbling that the body is not human reaches your ears but no one besides you three, the Sheriff and Old Bill actually get close enough to see the corpse. As Toth finishes his sketch he feels a vague memory trying to push to the surface. But the concept that this strange creature has a common, army issue fighting knife intrudes as perhaps significant and at the very least bothersome.

Old Bill invites everyone in and there is something of a rush to get out of the cold night.

Washington will be very interested in this, Toth muses, and wonders for a moment if he should call them right away, get more people here. He banishes the notion as quickly as it comes, though. There still isn't enough information.

"Caution is always held in high regard in weirdassed situations, Sonny," his grandfather used to say. He was right.

Toth closes his notebook, and follows the others inside.

Watching the others enter the building Vincent follows. However before he enters the building he does in fact peer off into the distance to se if he cay spy any movement 'out of the ordinary'.

Before entering the house the Sheriff sends half the posse back to town to let everyone know what had happened and to send a message out to Camberton for a medical examiner and some other help.

Old Bill's house is clean and brightly lit on the inside. Pleasant pictures of trees and springtime fields grace the walls. The smell of fresh baked bread hangs heavy in the air. The back door lets into a dining room and to the left is the kitchen. Ahead is a hallway to the center of the house with closed doors to the right and left and then a living room. Here there are two people. A male and female who look like no one from around the area that you have seen so far.

Everyone stands quietly, staring at each other. Occasionally glancing in the direction of the back door and the body in the yard. The two people are human, slightly below average in height but dressed in strange brightly colored (red, blue and green) pants and tunics. "They look like some pictures I saw of people from Central America or maybe South America" says one of the people from the posse.

The Sheriff seems stunned, and so the scene is set...

Happy Holidays!! We are headed over the fields and through the woods and up into the mountains to go to Grandma's House. I'll be gone for over a week so I wanted to give you a fine Seasons Greetings. I'll be back on New Year's Eve.

Toth seems to be stunned as well when he catches sight of the visitors to Old bill's house. He also breathes a sigh of relief. For some reason, he hadn't been expecting them to be human.

"Hello," he says tentatively, and tries a smile. "Where're you folks from?"
