War Games from GZG

Has anyone else here tried the rules from GZG? There's Full Thrust (which Power Projection: Fleet and PP:Escort are taken from for Traveller), Dirtside II for 1/300 scale ground combat and Stargrunt II for 25mm (and they claim 15mm) miniatures. I've recently gotten both Power Projection: Fleet and Stargrunt II. So far they sound cool.

Full Thrust and Dirtside II are free downloads from their site, btw.

Full thrust is simply fantastic. Dirtside and Stargrunt use the same basic mechanics but are 6mm and 25mm respectively. I find that there are a few too many die rolls for my tastes but they are still excellent games, and you just can't beat the price.

Full Thrust is THE standard game of space miniature combat (Starmada would love to claim that, but I don't think they do quite yet) despite not even being in print any more. The FT books are a free PDF download from GZG's site, and pretty much have everything I want in a space game.

I haven't tried Dirtside, though I have a copy. The rules are a little opaque for me, or were 5 years ago when I last tried to read them.

Stargrunt is nice for small platoon engagements, but does not have a points system and can be a little baroque to actually play.

I always thought that was the point of Stargrunt. Assemble 2 forces based more on a scenario driven basis instead of "we both pick x number of points" deal. Not very tournament friendly but I've always kinda liked those types of systems as long as I have the time to play both sides...

I've yet to play Dirtside though I've been slowly building a small collection of 6mm figs. Nice thing about 6mm figs is that if you aren't trying to paint 'em real fancy like they paint up real quick. The only thing about Dirtside I'm not so certain about is the whole chit pulling thing. There's a set of house rules out there that replaces the chits with dice but seems to complicate things a little more. Maybe once I get a chance to actually play it I won't mind the chits so much.

Apparently there's a 3rd version of Dirtside that they play at a GZG centered convention in the eastern US (ECC GZG iirc). If they'd release it I'd buy a copy.

I know this thread is about the GZG games, but I will also highly recommend Starmada X. I like it just as much as Full Thrust, it just plays a bit differently, and is quite a bit crunchier rules wise. FT has a looser feel to it. They're both great games if you wanna try starship combat.

My 2 cents.

I have full thrust, and it is an excellent game. The miniatures are some of the best starship models out there. The rules are geared more to actual fleet actions than most others, and movement really doesnt need to be thought about a lot. Most players spend the first couple of games powering forward and going right past their enemies and then having to come about and try again!

Dirtside is a great game. The rulebook is not layed out in a very flowing way so it seems daunting as you read through the rules but once you get a few turns under your belt it pretty easy. The chit pull thing isn't so bad and it gives an immense array of results and remember that things die extremely quickly when hit so the game moves pretty fast. It also handles morale in a neat way. I'd certainly recommend it for Hard near future SciFi type gaming.
