Cerridwyn1st
Last Thursday I slipped on a curb and sprained both ankles. EMT's came out and looked me over, said they didn't think it was broken. You can go to the ER but it will take up a lot of time... blah, blah. So I called my boss, let him know what happened, and took myself home to bed. Saturday rolls around and I'm not doing much better, so I go see my doctor. She had the tech x-ray it and said my right leg was broken. They made me a consult to see an orthopedist. The orthopedist I saw yesterday said I could have it operated on to pin the bone or put it in an ortho boot and see if it would heal on its own. So now I'm wearing this boot thing and hoping for the best. Just wanted to let you guys know. I haven't been answering emails or going on the boards for several days and now I'm trying to catch up. Fortunately I'm not in a lot of pain. Mostly just uncomfortable and damned inconvenienced. Mel
vutpakdi
Ouch! I'm glad to hear that you aren't in a lot of pain. Hey, if you're immobilized, does that mean that you have to sit around with nothing to do but paint minis? Or, at least, now you have a good excuse for doing so. I hope that your leg heals soon! LSTR
Ugh, boo for that. Get well soon.
Voladilk
Eeep. Sucks that the EMTs did what they did, but perhaps from the swelling and oedema they could not easily tell it was broken. Depending on the fracture as well it could be tough to diagnose clincally. Glad that your GP had the sense to get it x-rayed though. Here's hoping it heals quickly and you are back up and running soon! While you are doing not much, enjoy the time off and get some painting done! Enchantra
I'm not sure if you can file a complaint or not as each local Ambulance corp has its own version of handling complaints. However I would consider at least lodging a complaint. No, nothing will probably get done, but at least they will have it on file that there was a complaint should another thing like this happen in the future with another patient. An EMT who is properly trained in their line of work would have recommended an X-ray. I have enough friends who are EMTs to base this on. The bright side is at least you are not in pain and the break could have been much worse. At least you can still get around and you didn't require surgery. So here's my instructions: Get better soon! Mclimbin
I'm sorry you got hurt Mel. Get well soon. Or not, take a long break and relax!
ixminis
I'm sorry you broke your leg, but glad it wasn't a sprain. All the sprains I've had were worse than any breaks I've had....
GreyHorde
Ouch! Yeah, I can empathize, having a bone in my hand heal crookedly because it was misdiagnosed for more than two weeks. I also sprained one ankle badly enough to hide three bone chips from two doctors, an x-ray tech and an O.S. for three sleepless days, and it's never been right since then. All I can say is, do what they tell you about elevation, ice, staying off it and supporting it with the boot. Keep checking progress with your doctor(s), make sure it's healing properly in the right amount of time, else push for the surgery to get it corrected. It's much more difficult to fix later on. Even if it means no painting for a while so you maintain good circulation and heal faster, get better soon!

Qwyksilver
Michael has it in a nutshell. Most breaks will heal in 4-6 weeks. A really bad sprain can take more than 2 months, especially on a heavily used joint like an ankle, which you are going to be more apt to try and do more than you should because "it's just a sprain." Glad you got the Xray. If you have insurance, you should always request one, it will be covered and worst case scenario is you waste a couple hours in the ER (the EMT's were right about this, you'd not be considered a critical risk in triage and would likely be sitting for a long time), or an hour at the PCP and local lab. But then you get peace of mind. Take it easy, hope you're feeling better. Both ankles is really tough to deal with. I've been there. Enjoy the rest (make sure you get it). Cerridwyn1st
Thanks again guys. This is my first day back at work. It isn't as bad as I thought, but kind of like being pregnant. Seems like no matter what I do I can't get comfortable. Thank God a friend was able to lend me a wheel chair so I can get around while keeping the weight off the leg. Cerridwyn1st
Update on the broken leg: it's mostly healed. I went from the wheelchair to walking again in about six weeks. From walking with the Frankenstien Boot to a brace with built in splints in about another four weeks. I'll be with the brace about another 3 - 4 weeks and I'm done. Thanks again for the well-wishes.
