Vil-hatarn
I'm currently using my Vale Archers as Rangers. 3198 Talathlan looks like a nice proxy when I do get some though.
Vil-hatarn
So, elf players: RC08 is out. Archers and mages have been rebalanced, and we have two new models (archer sergeant and saproling warriors). Thoughts? Concerns? New tactics or army lists? To start, I personally think Vale Archers are much more feasible to field now with their lowered cost, and Larnach looks even awesomer than we already was, but they'll still need their bodyguards. I can see the new Saproling Warriors working well for this--they don't need to move far, so their (relatively) slow movement isn't such a disadvantage, and they have decent DV and deflect. Plus, as one of the few tough models in the army, if you've got a cleric around they get even better.
spiritual_exorcist
As I expressed in another thread, I like the idea of trying out Faery models strictly as a support mechanic, with their Movement of 10 they could cover huge tracks of the board to offer +1 support bonus' against a model on an upcoming activation. With their 3 damage tracks they are fairly hearty and at 30 points they aren't too much of an investment if you want 3-4 of them just to try this notion out. I think Ardynn becomes much nicer with his Innate(Bolt) even if he only ever uses it defensively. Give him an Ice Shards, let him take his Ranger move, and turn one he can make an offensive spell shot, while the remainder of the game he goes into melee mode (perhaps carrying a Counter spell to protect his troop as well). If he drops a few damage tracks you can pull him back and use Bolt to snipe at wounded enemy models with weakened MD.

If she doesn't move you have 3xRAV +8 shots or 1xRAV +12 Critical for 2 pts damage!!! Let the treemen handle the melee while she snipes the mages and warlord from 28" away. Cheers, Brian
Vil-hatarn
Hmmm...I think I'd be more inclined to use the lesser bow, simply due to cost reasons--she becomes too vulnerable for her cost at 147. 117 isn't quite so bad. On the other hand...+12. Wow. I'll admit, I've never actually used her...I probably should, she's good for that first point of damage which the vale archers can follow up on. Feanor
Galdoneth is really sweet now too. The sniper SA rocks although I think a few more elves should have it.
Vil-hatarn
Yeah, it would've been nice to see it on Eawod or Caerwynn or even as some sort of faction ability. But that could get unbalanced quickly, I suspect, especially against certain armies. Good points on Ardynn, spiritual; I always found him hard to use before because you didn't want to waste his spells or his melee potential; the innate bolt covers that problem pretty nicely. I'm interested in that fairy idea too; at half the price of centaur warriors, they could actually make a more effective flanker. However...I'm not particularly partial to the woodland creatures in general, so I might not try it myself.
