Skipper
I'm considering building a samurai list using the Free Company riules. I'll start with the Samurai in the mercenaries and then select appropriate cards from the nuetral lists and either good or evil. I hateto give up a faction ability to get the list, especially since the advantages of a free company are greatly reduced with archers now being grunts and the number of variety in each faction being extensive. Still, I really want to get my Clan War models back into battle after all these years. (Its a shame that game went under, it had a lot of potential). I really like the bald chick. I think the Sisters actually are pretty similar to the O. Ronins. You could probably do a neutral/good merc army and still get the faction abilities. You'd have four or five caster cards to use for monks. Shadow sisters, Coalshadow, Kyla, Nalada and Dingo all have that martial artist feel. jdripley
I've been pondering a freelance Ogre army for a long time now. Just put together the list, along with suitable proxies. I estimate the cost of purchasing all the miniatures for this list to be somewhere around $170-$200. It's Neutral/Good and uses 13 different sculpts - no re-used datacards! Each one is "unique" - I put that in quotes because, for the most part, each datacard is 4 tracks, 3 attacks, mav 6 or 7. There are differences, though, in DV and SA's. If you search "ogre" in the gallery you'll get pictures of all of the models that I'm using for proxy. One caveat - I'm proxying Vasyl, who is in fact a Warlord. Guess I can't take this one to Gencon! If I were a skilled sculptor, I'd have the warlord wearing Vasyl as a fur cloak! Here's the list: Troop 1: Lord Vasyl, Warlord - 3162, Kagunk Ogre Boss Durthen, Boar Rider - 2933, Talanka Minotaur - 2537, Orankar River Troll - 2966, Gorevane Troop 2: Uru, Captain - 2832, Ogre Chieftan Corm, cleric - 2486, Ogre Mage Bear Rider - 2786, Mash Ogre Warrior - 2288, Garnuk Troop 3: Gurm, Captain - 14054, Gurm Uszkuluz, cleric - 142132, Yagun Oog Brood of Payanak - 2312, Vourgha Lupine Rager - 14038, Braug Troop 4, Solo: Lesser Avatar - 2325, Kagunk, Ogre Chieftan Spells for Corm: Teleport, Call Lightning, Cure2, Divine Vigor (80 pts) Spells for Uszuluz - Hold, Cure3, Cure2 (70 pts) Equipment for Vasyl - Greater Magical Armor (30pts) Equipment for Durthen - Magic Weapon (15) Comes in a little low at 1488. 4 troops, 13 models. I'm not sure it's a magnificent army. Lots of warmaster, lots of frenzy, and a good amount of healing, combined with high attack values... there are some scary low DV's though, for such a low model count army. I tried to have a Shock model in every troop because that's a fun ability, and there's enough Reach spread around that you have options when the line of battle becomes cluttered and you can't get those large base sizes in where you want them. I think the list is just good enough to have fun messing around with. If I were rich I'd drop the money and get the minis right now. But as it is, I'll have to just sit on the idea for now :D
Forlorn Hope
What a great idea - I have a couple of these Ogre models and they are among my favs of the DHL line. I have been thinking about a freelance force as well using a variety of models after a theme (as you have done), but I am torn at the moment on which theme to follow. The first I was thinking of was Elementals and the Wizards who summon them, so the list would be wizards and things that could be elementals of various size. The other one I was thinking of was a kind of Thieve's guild, so cloaky models with Backstab, Ranger, Spy, etc. Good luck with this list, and post how they do when you take them out for the first time. I have not played Warlord yet and am wondering how large models do as opposed to the numbers and smaller cheaper models. FH

jdripley
Not necessarily. Post Rage Chronicles 07, the quality of the models you bring matters just as much as the quantity. I've seen victories go both ways. I do like your note on combined arms. Adding layers like range, mages, and clerics can definitely leverage the power of your army. Makes it a little bit more complicated to pull off (as compared to a pure mob of melee fighters that you push across the table), but that just adds to the fun! Qwyksilver
All good things come to an end. RC2007 is being replaced with RC2008. Check out your new faction thread: Freelance 2008
