Whizard Hlavaz
Is there some reason this site suddenly wants to run a 'Windows Media Player Extension' add-on? Is this supposed to be happening? Very out of the ordinary. Do I trust this website and want to allow the add-on to run???
Moderator Froggy the Great Posted June 14, 2007 Moderator Share Posted June 14, 2007 Kit, of course, has the final word on this, but I'm pretty sure this site is NOT supposed to do that. I advise you to run a virus and spyware check ASAP.
Super Administrators kit Posted June 14, 2007 Super Administrators Share Posted June 14, 2007 What's the name of that extension? I'm not finding any markup for it in the source of the page.
Whizard Hlavaz
Well, I *didn't* trust the site (sorry, Kit) and didn't load it. As I say, seemed highly unusual. But I will run a virus check. Thanks!
Whizard Hlavaz
Full scan reveals nothing. Still getting extension request. Need I worry?
Moderator Froggy the Great Posted June 14, 2007 Moderator Share Posted June 14, 2007 I'd give Kit all the information (what extension, what page, browser, etc) if you can.
Super Administrators kit Posted June 14, 2007 Super Administrators Share Posted June 14, 2007 Dude, I just booted into Windows for you. That's how dedicated I am to this forum. Anyway, running the latest IE 6 with security patches, I can't recreate a windows media plugin prompt. Firefox comes up with nothing for me, either. If you figure something out, please let me know. kit
vutpakdi
I'm running Windows XP (Tablet PC version, Service Pack 2, all current patches). In Firefox (current version), no worries and no messages. In IE7 (all current patches), going to the Reaper home page, I do get a "This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Windows Media Player Extension'" message. I do have Norton Internet Security 2007 installed. In Opera 9.21, no worries and no messages. Weird... Ron
Whizard Hlavaz
Dude, I just booted into Windows for you. That's how dedicated I am to this forum. Now there's some love!!! I'm running IE7 (7.0.5730.11) on this box. The message I receive from IE7's pop-up blocker specifically reads "This website wants to run the following add=on: 'Windows Media Player Extension' from 'Microsoft Corporation'. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here..." I don't get this on any other websites, but I do get it on EVERY Reaper page. This started today. I've never seen it before. I did not patch/update or anything prior to coming online.
psyberwolfe1
Win XP sp2 running ie7. I didn't get that message at all. I dd get a request on the the main reapermini site if I wanted to run a Quick Time app which was a little strange. I didn't click it. Super Administrators kit Posted June 14, 2007 Super Administrators Share Posted June 14, 2007 ah ha! I got it. Dang IE7... I installed a plugin in our tracking system to see if users had Quicktime or not. The clue for all Reaper sites was the tip-off there, thanks. Apparently, to check with IE7 gives it a hissy, which is what you're seeing. I disabled the extension and sent a bug report to the developers. Sorry for the alarm. Now, if this wasn't it, please let me know. But I'm pretty sure it is. kit
pae
Whiz, maybe you should try the beta of Safari for Windows. I'm liking it pretty well so far.
Crusoe the Painter
Some hackers have inserted code that only comes once in a while in a page. I'd check the server kit, just to be sure. Not just the page source.
Super Administrators kit Posted June 14, 2007 Super Administrators Share Posted June 14, 2007 If nobody is seeing this behavior on IE 7 anymore, I'm thinking it was that tracking extension and not something nefarious.
vutpakdi
Just checked with IE7: no more requests to add the Media Player Extension. Ron
