Universal Challenge

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am going to lay down a challenge/contest.

This challenge/contest is going to have prizes involved.

I will write some official rules up over the weekend for this, but while I have it in my head I am going to go ahead and get this on the record...

I will be giving out prizes for IN-GAME battle pictures.

Things that will be included in judging:

picture quality

picture content

descriptive writeup participation from both combatants involved (something that helps prove it was from an actual played game and not just someone throwing some mins down and photoing to win a prize)

anything else I can think of between now and when I write up the official rules.

My current plan is to give out a prize or two at the end of each month for the next few months. But, again the exact to be determined (insert reaper copyrighted term here).

We have all these cool new datacards. So, I want to hear about them and how they play. I understand that any pictures taken right now woud have to include lots of proxies, that is fine. I am not worried about that.

The point is to get people playing and not just talking. AND then sharing with everyone else the results of those games and any really cool in game moments that happen.

Very cool idea. I will be sure to snap some pictures for you. I will set my camera bag beside my Reaper bag as soon as I'm through posting.

Bah, I took pictures but it turned out I was taking a movie (which apparently doesn't want to copy off of the camera). Tuesday I'll have pictures up of another game, plus I'm not sure I want to post pictures of the absolutely smashing that the army of justice got handed to them today by the reptus.

No need to rush to get pictures, make sure to get worthwhile pics.

Wildbill, i need to figure out a way to make the rules viable for most people to play by and still enter. Obviously the main intent of this is to get some good pictures, some good battle report discussions, and good sharing of information related to how games are going, how the different new models are playing, etc...

I have read off and on, thru most all of the battle reports posted on reapergames. Some are very well done. And some others are not, but overall, my experience reading them has been that most people tend to go with less description instead of more. Very few take the time to include any real information in them. Maybe its cause the winner is posting it and they know the loser has to sign off so they dont want to gloat. Maybe its the fact that it has a very limited number of characters that can be used so noone has the room to write a decent report. Maybe they realize that someone else might read it and dont want to give any shred of hint of how they play in case they meet some tie at Reapercon. I think its probably closer to most people are lazy and just dont care to write much more than "i won".

So, i dont mind letting you in on my secret. I want to get people writing about their games. I want to use the information to learn about models, about players, about factions, about cool tactics that i had not thought of or not seen before used against me. I want to see this as a huge story line shaping up like reapergames was originally meant to do, where we can use information from battles fought to tell a story. Especially with all thesee new datacards. I will never have time to play with them all myself, so I thought this would be a good way to see them in action so to speak.

I know that just by havign a little contest, that it is not realistic to think that poof all of a sudden everyone is going to do this or that even more than a few people will participate (because most people will either forget their cameras, or will say "i havent painted my army and so i dont want to photo them) but just like everything else in this, it has to start somewhere. And then we'll see where we can take it.

edited: to be a little less dramatic.

I have read off and on, thru most all of the battle reports posted on reapergames. And by and large, the only description that I can give is: THEY SUCK! No body says anything in them. Maybe its cause the winner is posting it and they know the loser has to sign off so they dont want to gloat. Maybe its the fact that it has a very limited number of characters that can be used so noone has the room to write a decent report. maybe it is the fact that you waste time writing things like stories for the fiction and get 1 worthless point for it then your like well why waste my time writing anything

I have no problem giving a play by play account of how the game went. Besides, every game is a totally new situation. New terrain. New opponent. Different army design. Etc.

What if I made sure that any pictures I took had both myself and my opponent in there somewhere? Would that be good enough? I would post even if I lost. ^_^

I used to post pics as well as repost my battle reports on my own website. I think you're being a bit harsh saying everybody's reports "sucked" though. Most folks find it unsporting to gloat about their victories to their friends, and I would bet an equal number of people are disinclined to reveal their particular winning strategy (though I have NO idea what a winning strategy is).

All that aside, it could probably be a fun competition. How do people go about entering though. Will there be an on-forum topic or is it by email?

Mine is simple: make sure my dice are loaded better than my opponent's.

Spike, my apologies, you are correct, I went a little over dramatic there. I will edit my earlier post.

Airccrew, it should never be about the points. Besides, I am not talking about the fiction writing area of reapergames, I was talking about battle reports.

Ok, I have been trying to write some form of "official" rules for this picture challenge, but really have not been able to as there are just too many "what if" type situations.

So, it is just really simple.

If I see in game pictures that I think are cool (whether it be because the game is cool, the situation in the pic is cool, the game table played on is cool, the paintjobs ae cool, the game desription is cool, etc.. etc... etc...) then I will just announce you as a winner in my challenge. It is my challenge after all, and my prizes that I am giving away. So, there you have it. Just an open challenge to pot good battle pictures (hopefully with game atmosphere descriptions).

And the first winner is Sergei for his pictures related to an awesome table there at Origins. Sergei, PM me and we can arrange for the prize delivery.
