Hate to approach a professional with my opinion, but I do it to everyone else here so... What about the blue feather in her hair? Looks like it needs something... better definition?

You can approach me with your opinion all you want, just be prepared for me to look at you with an exasperated "Meep!" and say that of course it needs more work!! That's why I'm frustrated!! Anyhoo, it would be nice to bring in a little more shading and highlighting, yeah. ::): The problem with feathers, btw, is that you have two options: Quick and Dirty or Ohmigosh This Takes Forever. Ask any high-level painter--they are such a pain in the butt! So these are all Quick and Dirty right now. Hopefully I will have time to fix them at some point in the future, but maybe not. I never have the time to do a true competition-level paintjob on stuff for work, really.

After the insanity that is Gencon is done hopefully you'll have a chance to come back and fill us in on colors used for some of the 'rushed' segments like the sand. I seem to struggle dispropotionately with some of the simple things like realistic sand

Soinull, the sand basecoat was hotly debated in my head throughout the painting. I knew that since I was going with so much NMM gold so close to the sand that I was going to have issues if I made it too yellow, so that meant a lot of possible colors which would normally have been attractive were just out of the running. I considered some greyish Khaki-type colors but finally settled on my second-favorite neutral, the Stained Ivory. The basecoat is that. ::): I will be highlighting up with a mix of Stained and Creamy Ivory and will probably hit the very highest points with Linen White, then see if that makes a convincing enough white sand beach. ::): If it needs a hint of something golden I can always glaze!

Thanks, I appreciate you humoring a newb... there will be a lot more to criticize when I post one of my WIPs. Trust me, finding something to improve on your mini is very difficult.

No problem at all Toad, go ahead and say stuff, heck, you could easily hit on something that I haven't spotted, that happens all the time!!:lol:

And now...drum roll please...

FINAL PICS!!! (at least for now)(meaning much is quick and dirty)(but by the gods it's done and now I can start packing the 400+ miniatures that need to go to Gen Con in less than a week!)(boy I do ramble on, though, don't I?)

Okay, okay, kidding!! ::D:

There's a close-up on the face below, too...I did get iris, pupil, and reflection dot all there, though I think if I take a look under a magnifier it's probably messy.

OKAY!!

wow Anne. I really don't know how you do it and I've watched you. I really like this one. Can I take her home now?! ::P:

no, cuz she's coming home with me...even if I have to drag Anne along with her...hey thats a thought.

Anne she is georgeous. i want to critisize, but with 2 un-finished competition minis on my desk, I just can't...well that and she is totally AWESOME!!!!

I see we still don't have a drooling smiley. One would be highly appropriate right now.

Considering you felt rushed Anne, that is one heck of an impressive paint job. When I feel rushed it doesn't look even close to that good.

I agree about the feathers. There really are only two ways to do them as you described and they are a pain in the butt.

This is just fantastic Anne. I know many have already thanked you for doing this, but I just want to add my voice to the choir. As someone just starting to get his brushes wet in a new hobby, it's inspiring to see something like this from start to finish. I've learned a lot just from reading this and can't wait to start trying some of this stuff myself.

When I decided I wanted to paint minis, I had several companies I could have made my purchases from. I decided on Reaper mostly because I saw how much the company interacts with their community and how helpful that community was. And I knew I was going to need a lot of help. Seeing the beautifully painted minis around here and wondering how the heck I could do that can be quite intimidating. Having their pros like you take the time to do a WIP like this is just another example of why I chose to go with Reaper. It really helps to demystify the process and show me that with enough practice, I might be able to do that one day. So the next time your bosses tear you away from the forums, just tell them two words "brand loyalty".

Great work Anne, I've been watching this thread in silence. What I like best about her are the skin tone and the very sexy lip color. Thanks for sharing the process. Now on to a question.

When you were working on the skin, you said, you might go back to it and adjust it later depending on how the rest of the colors are shaping up. When doing the hair you said you might add more white to the top of her head, and when doing the NMM, you said you might glaze it back down a bit again depending on the rest of the contrast on the mini. Did you go back to do any of that?
