Spike
Awww the miles aren't so boring if you have another passenger along. We've driven out from Georgia for the last four conventions (12-14 hr drive) and though it takes longer, we all agree it's alot less hassle than flying. First, we can take whatever we want with us without having to worry about how much of it will be confiscated by airline security. Secondly, we don't have to deal with rental car, renting a carpark at the airport, and the inevitable delays associated with flying. Best of all, we get to see ALOT of America. Besides, Unglef is like B.A. Baraccus from The A-Team. He'd show no pity for the fool that made him go on a plane.

Spike
How about Greyhound? Having done it myself a time or two, I can tell you firsthand you'll meet some "very interesting" people. Just don't make deliberate eye-contact with any of them or ask what's in any of their bags. You don't want to know. Trust me. Seriously, I bet you could find a gaming buddy or somebody local to you to help you out. If you offer to pay for the gas I bet they'd be more than happy to work with you. Star Drifter
I took a train once. Almost cost as much as flying, but it's probably roomier than a bus. And there is a share of freaks, but they were polite enough to me. Then again, I might be one of them anyway...

Jubilee
True. At 35 MPG, gas would be $170 at $3 per gallon not bad. Now have to get past all those long boring miles... That's what audio books are for =) /ali ps. I can't imagine driving to Reapercon - I think all told it would come out to be more expensive than flying, after you factor in gas, a hotel or two, and meals.. plus the extra time off that I wouldn't get paid for (and the extra days of vacation my husband would have to sacrifice). But I'm in Oregon, so it's quite a ways..

Enchantra
I plan on attending in 2008 unless the furies of life assail me like they did this year. I fly, and I pack two carry-ons, one of which is half-full so the other half can hold all my Reaper-goodness. When I flew I packed a few minis, my contest entry and my paint brushes. I did not pack paints as Reaper had an abundance at hand and I wanted that baggage space for minis to bring home with me. I think I dropped close to $350 between the boneyard and the asylum at Rcon06. At this point the problem would be getting my second job to let me have the time off since that job is at a nursery, and May is the height of nursery season. haldir
I thought about driving one year, but mainly the extra time off would probably be a pain, due to my workplace can't even get a weekend off right (suppose to be this one but only got a partial of it, grrr), thus flying is really the only way for me to get to Rcon each year. thou I think next year I'm gonna arrive on Tues get a rental & then spend the rest of the week in Texas, coming home Monday. Weds is pretty good day for me to arrive but I just want anther day there I guess, depends on choice Rcon hotel I guess, then again can always stay in a cheapie Tues, then head to Rcon hotel Weds RM
Baphomet69
I'd sure like to make it to the next one (it'd be my first). Looks like flying is the way to go for me: La Habra, CA to Denton, TX Total Est. Time: 20 hours, 21 minutes Total Est. Distance: 1385.22 miles Looks like flight would be about $350...that's a lot of pewter...
Rastl
I'm trying to build my frequent flier miles up again so I could get a free flight next year but that doesn't seem to be working very well. I'll be trying to get in the day before the con actually starts so I'm fresh and rested. I got in the first day one year and was wiped. Too much travel, too little sleep. I'm glad I'm not the only one who considers costs in terms of lost pewter! But my buying has become more selective the more times I've gone. Not less expensive mind you, just more selective. I bring some minis for show, some to paint, and my brushes. There's plenty of paint in the Paint and Take area along with a good selection of minis so I can try techniques, etc. So my packing going down there is pretty light. Coming back has been an entirely different story! My only issue is that my brain gets so full after the convention I don't paint for at least a month. I need that long to absorb the information and get the painting bug back.

OR, just fly the whole way. Whichever is cheapest.
kristof65
My wife and I drove this year - Denver to Denton. When I compared the money we spent on gas and hotels on the trip versus flying, for the two of us it was pretty close to the same costs - we probably saved about $50 by driving. Now, if we had timed our driving better - IE, leaving in the mornings instead of afternoons, we could cut out some hotel nights (or at least have them at the better RCon hotel rate) - we would have saved significantly more by driving. However, if I go alone next year, I'm definitely going to fly, as the plane ticket and rental car for one person is less than the cost of driving. If we manage to talk another couple into coming with us, then we'll all probably drive together.
