Question... thinking about learning Warlord

Recommended Posts

The problem is that there are more minis in the deluxe starter than you can legally field with the captains that come in the box.

What seems to be the problem? It looks fine to me, so I'm wondering what I'm missing.

There are 9 Unforgiven and 9 Skeletal Swordsmen (in addition to the Ironraven, Halbarad, Sir Azarphan, and Naomi) in the box. With the RC 2007 changes, neither captain can field all of the soldiers. Still a great starter set.

I believe Ironraven can only hold 8 people, and that is 9 in the troop. ^_^

And I think Azarphan the Prancing ::P: can only have 6 people, because he's prancing.

If it was me, I'd proxy the captains as Warlords Gerard and Judas, then all the figs can be used and that probably brings the points closer to. Or you could buy two more leaders.

Oh, OK. I think I understand, in a general sort of way (not having read the rules yet.) So, both factions in the deluxe starter set require one additional leader in order to field all their troops. Otherwise you just don't play with all available subordinates. There's no reason why I can't pick up Gerard and Judas along with the set, or proxy something.

Even without them, that's still a lot of minis for the money. Now I just have to wait a month or so until my birthday... unless I can find a way to justify the expense to my lovely bride sooner than that. :)

Thanks again!

Yes. Under the pre Rage Chronicles 2007 troop limits for those leaders, they could both field the troops in the box. The Rage Chronicles 2007 reduced the maximum troop limits for the sergeants and captains (for the most part).

Initially, you're probably better off getting a couple of sergeants (say Sir Conlan and Railor) rather than Gerard and Judas. But, really, there is no reason that you have to get anything else other than the deluxe starter set (if you're inclined to get into the game that way).

There should be a New BL down in Toledo hosting Warlord activities within the month that might be able to help you get your feet wet.

I just got back from a Warlord demo at The Game Room in Toledo. Everything went well and a good time was had by all attending. It looks like there's a lot of potential for Warlord in "T" town. Just my two cents...

p.s. - The Necropolis was victorious.

I am kinda in the same situation, cept I have two friends who could teach me(Ashkyrpt's Crew, and another friend) only my income does not have the 'foundations' for an expensive hobby. I would really like to play and learn but I need an inexpensive way to get into playing. Which army is the cheapest to start with?

I saw someone field 1500 points of Necropolis with under 20 minis. Judas, a nice captain, and about 15 crimson knights. That list put up a pretty tough fight, too. Everything is good at dishing out the hurt, and can do vampiric feeding. Nasty.

Reaper is also putting out some very nice pre-painted plastic skeletons, which would probably be an inexpensive add-on for later.

The cheapest way to get started is probably to scout ebay for lots of warlord minis. It could take a while though to find something that suits your preferences and price range. Alternatively as Saint Vierzehn said, you can make a compact army if you want it to be cheaper. Judas + Elsabeth + 18 crimson knights is a valid (and very nasty) close combat army composed entirely of vampires.

Pointswise it is 1590 points without equipment upgrades, in real money it is $80 for the Crimson Knights (2 army packs), $8 for Judas and $6 for Elsabeth. Grand total of $94, which at least to me is still a lot of money.

I'd start out with buying your favorite factions Warlord and an army pack of close combat oriented Adepts. For my army (the Overlords) Ashkrypt + 8 Phalanx costs about $47 and in game terms about 550 points before buying spells and equipment.

After the initial investment of $45-$50 you can expand in $5-$10 increments buying a single mini at a time. The good thing about warlord minis is that they're not priced according to game value, so a model that is a powerful wizard in the game will likely still just be around 5 bucks retail.

Where in Ohio are you? There seem to be a number of active BL members in Ohio.

There isn't one "cheapest" faction per se. The horde armies are going to be the most expensive to field (ones that rely on large numbers of cheap troops, namely goblins (without giants) and Necropolis (skeleton heavy)).

Units consisting of mainly larger minis will require fewer units, but the individual minis will cost more.

I suggest picking a faction that suits your style and then trying to find one of the old $40 MSRP starter boxes for that faction (at your local store or online). Picking up that box, a sergeant, and then 3 archer types (total, around $60) will give you a good starting force that is big enough to be flexible and have fun.

Another way to get started is to proxy with minis that you already have (mounted on bases if needed) just to get a feel for the game.
