Diesa's debut

My dwarven barbarian, Diesa, made her debut tonight! Hoorah! I was/am pretty excited to start my very first character ever!! So of course I've been looking forward to tonights session for two weeks.

Within minutes of joining the group we venture upon a black dragon! eek! So my very first character fights my very first monster, black dragon. I know this is probably kind of uncommon due to the fact that I joined an existing party, already at 11th level. So I'm wondering, what was your first monster with your first character? Or, I guess any memorable firsts.

My first monster was a hell hound. It was chained in the bak of a room, so my cleric summoned some astral dogs to lay the beat down on it.

The first time I ever lost a character, was when a pair of zombie dwarves killed our entire 6 person party. Only the sorcerer's raven survived. It was quite embarrassing.

My first ever "monster" was my character.

I killed "myself" without knowing it. Then I got to the end of the dungeon and I was there - and I proceeded to get killed by myself.

Yes, you read that right...

I'm often surprised that I actually gave RPGs another shot after that fiasco.

First and favorite D&D-type character: A constantly invisible, Elven Great Hound (DM created species) the size of a Clysedale who tagged along with the drunken druid of the party with an infinite Bag of Holding. When visible, Doggy was bright purple but could do the Chesire cat bit of selective visibility.

First monster faced by said Hound by itself: A large, red dragon. Dragon 0, Hound 1, Planets inside BOH now occupied by a race of giants and one small (by comparison) red dragon, 1.

Yes, the DM was very happy I figured out how to stuff a dragon into the bag because in pure stat comparison.. the dragon (who could see me) would've squashed me like a bug if I'd tried to fight it. A lil' test of the gray matter for Doggy.

Hmm... 1979.

Over at Robbie's house. I made a first level Cleric from this blue book. I had no idea what I was doing. We were going through S2 - White Plume Mountain.

There was some kind of room with platforms hanging by chains over boiling mud, I believe. We were attacked by a vampire. I cast light. They killed it with poisoned-vorporal-returning-throwing axes.

I was hooked instantly.

I have it kinda sad, actually...

1st PC: a gold dragon fighter in "Council of Wyrms"

1st Monster: the ogres that invade the hatchery in the module...

:down: yeah...i know...it's like loosing maidenhead to the high school tool.

my second PC was a fantastic display in a different group:

Black Matthias: an Elven Psion (back when they were limited to 7th level, the ADnD rules...)

i took him from 1st Lvl to 6th...very good days there. never thought of multiclass

(he still deserves a miniature..)

----no monsters involved until a few sessions passed... they were Githyanki, and they acted less like mosnters and more like a raiding party...they actually ran from me once i attacked!

after that PC i degenerated into RPG Killfests.... didn't actualy roleplay again until 1999, when i started my own group...

My first serious D&D character was an elf (back when elf was a class) named Silverrain (yes, he was a guy; no, he didn't wear green tights). I say serious because I learned to play D&D when I was six - the older brother of one of my brother's friends taught us... My first adventure went along the lines of, "You enter a room, and...-KILL IT!! KILL IT!!"

Anyhoo, I think I was eight when I rolled up the elf. I thought I was sooo cool because I had a sword *and* a spell... The party was just two 1st lvl elves, and being eight years old we figured it was a *bright* idea to charge straight at an ogre... One shot. He pounded my elf like a freakin nail. <nostalgic sniff>

Incidentally, "Mad Jack" was also one of my favorited characters...

Currently I'm totally pleading innocent to having power-gamed my current swashbuckler/swordsage(Shadow Hand discipline) with a spiked chain, STR and INT of 14, DEX of 15, and the Shadow Blade feat... (I swear, it just came together accidentally, but write out the progression on paper and by fifth level, it' absolutely sca-a-a-a-a-ry how much minimum damage you're doing...)

1978- Holmes "Blue Book" Basic D&D.

I was a fighter named Apollo and the 1st monster I faced was none other than the infamous "Orc in a 10x10' room guarding a chest." ::):

Were we in the same room? That was my first encounter as well. (Add Twighlight theme music here)

1981, 11 years old. I rolled up a Ranger, 1st level. My buddy was going to DM and run me through a solo adventure using a new module he bought, "Vault of the Drow". My character entered, turned the first coner and was turned to stone by the glare of a basilisk. Two hours of character creation time, 5 minutes of play. Yeah, good times.

I started DMing shortly thereafter and have only played a hand full of characters since. :B):

I do still imagine that first ranger used by some drow priestess as a statue in her mushroom garden.
