fieldarchy
I'm working with Demi Metallics on this entire mini. Thought I'd put another WIP up in case anyone has questions about working with metallics.
fieldarchy
Got some paint on but have to wait for it to dry really well before I can continue to handle it.
wyrmgear
I think this is a really neat mini; I can't wait to see what you do with it.
Toad
Like what you've done so far. Will the spine scales be a different metallic entirely or in the same bronzey family?
fieldarchy
still not sure toad. I was just using it to hold the mini so I didn't paint it yet. I was thinking about doing a different color. The hooves and horns will probably be silver so I was thinking of doing that on the spine as well. Dunno, well see in the next couple of days what I feel like doing with it. Sorry if updates to the WIP are going to be slow. Classes just started again . . . ugh . . . just four more and I'm done though!
Dane
Wow, that guy must be heavy! Maybe a tarnished copper for the spines/tail, etc? Whatever they call that greenish stuff that forms on copper/bronze...
John Lee
Excellent putty work, I'm working on a dragon now and i hope I can be as successful at filling the gaps as you did. Look forward to seeing your take on this one. John Lee

fieldarchy
hmm yeah that may throw things off a bit. If the rest of him is shiney why would the spine have oxidized? I don't think it would jive. I think I'm going to keep things simple on this one, just bright and shiney!
haldir
one of my favorite minis to come out in awile. I thought about going the old bronze look to him, but I like what you've done so far with him. Dane, the body is hollowed out to reduce metal costs. PurityThruFire
Meg - as you are doing this coud you please explain demi-metallics. I've heard of this technique but I'm still not really sure how one goes about doing it or for that matter what it actually is I'm always looking for new ways to do metallics as I really do not dabble with NMM, personal choice on that one. Fantastic looking mini btw, may have to pick myself up one.
fieldarchy
Sure thing PTF, happy to oblige Demi metallics is when you mix inks and paints with metallic paints for shading/highlighting purposes. So, the mix I've started with is 2 parts PP Bright Gold, 2 Parts RMS Brown Liner and 2 parts RMS Chestnut Brown. I've only done part of one layer of basecoat. I need to double the recipe to cover the entire body.
fieldarchy
Any specific questions on demi metallics?
Helltown
So.... Demimetallics is kinda sorta using an existing metallic paint as a mixing medium? I mean... I abuse the heck of out my bottle of VMC metallic medium, it's basically a gloss medium with metallic fleck, but I haven't quite figured out how to layer it yet (it's also pretty thick stuff), so I'll glaze or wash over it to add more depth and highlights. That leads to my next question: How do _you_ thin metallics? I used the floox wax mix, I've used VMC thinner, RMS thinner, and of course distilled water but I seem to spend a lot more time stirring than actually painting with my mixes if I try to get them to the consistency I'm comfortable layering with. If I don't thin them enough... well... the layers are clumpy.
fieldarchy
To thin metallics like the RMS's just use a little bit of water. For the most part you don't really thin them like you would a regular non-metallic paint. VGC is very thick and gets clumpy easily. I'd just start staying away from those. They've also ruined a lot of brushes for me. Demi metallics is just where you add regular paint to metallics to tint it a different color. Do you remember seeing my Sci Fi Sophie? That was demi metallics on her . . .
