haldir
Meg question on the greenstuff near the spine plates did you force the putty in there after gluing the 2 halves together or did you make a line on one part, glued then worked the putty. As there is a slight gap under the spines to the body, wasn't sure how to tackle that part & I like what you did to your's. btw been a bit since I looked at mine but is there a big defect on that hoof that has the gs on it? fieldarchy
Yup there was a HUGE mold line that I could file off on the hoof. Easier to green stuff. For the gap I forced a line of green stuff under the spine scales after I glued the piece together. I figured gluing it together and then puttying it would work better than trying to guess it. And it did.
haldir
thanks for the input. I use greystuff but I assume it'd be the same techinque again thanks for the answers RM
fieldarchy
yes same technique. the main difference between grey stuff and green stuff is that the grey is stickier.
fieldarchy
Hey everyone, so I have the bull basecoats done. Been busy trying to finish the exchange mini haven't had much time to work on this one! Anyway, for those who may be highlight metallics challenged here's a trick . . . highlighting is one of the next steps. Since I mixed metallic with a paint, the shine still shows through on the basecoats. When putting it under lamps the light reflects and you can see where the highlights need to go. This is how I always paint metallics and most of my highlights even on just matte non metallic surfaces. Hold the mini to the light the way you want the light source hitting the mini. Then just highlight the area that is lit up. Basically painting highlights on, you are accentuating the areas that light sources are hitting anyway to give them more depth and to make them look more convincing. Toad
I'm liking. Are the hooves going to be matte or shiny?
fieldarchy
The hooves, tip of tail and horns are all done with Shadowed Steel so it's a metallic paint. I'm going to highlight it up so yes it will be shiney. It's a brass bull . . . it needs to be done in all metallics

But the more I think about it, you're probably right. A matte finish would contrast to much with the shiney scales...
PurityThruFire
If you get the chance I'd love to see some pics of the highlighting process.
fieldarchy
That's what I'm workin' on PTF. School and work and now seeing someone are taking up more time than I would like. I just got some highlighting done . . let me scampers and take photos . . . I can post what I've done so far.
fieldarchy
Ok here are some pictures of the first round of highlights getting started. I know you can see them on here but it may look a bit funny right now. I haven't had a chance to highlight all of him yet, just some sections of scales. I will do more this weekend as I would like to get this one done by Sunday evening.
fieldarchy
The gold is almost completely highlighted. I have one more round I think. What do you guys think so far? Any advice is welcome.
Versutus Vulpes
To quote the great crew of Serenity ~ "Shiny!". Nice so far Meg - only thing I would wonder about is how this model would look if the gold started darker then worked up to the current highlight... Hmmmm... Maybe I'll have to see about getting it and trying for myself... Great stuff... Keep up the good work.
fieldarchy
it probably doesn't look like it was started all that dark but if I had done it any darker it would have been that much more difficult to highlight up and make look somewhat convincing. Well I just did the silver bits. I'm going to let them dry, then quickly varnish and take over to paint club for Anne. I had to get Carinith back too and touch up some bits on her too. Hopefully there will be photos up soon.
Ayin
I like how he's looking so far. As for the base being darker, are you going to leave his darkest tones as is, or go in with a wash to help add definition to the plates? Either way. I'm sure his base gold will look darker once you hit your brightest highlights. Looking forward to new pics!
