ixminis
Sounds like everyone has covered the topic pretty well. I'm definitely looking at correcting my issue in a similar manner.... whole-sale batch getting-rid-of-it goodness. I'm close to ready for the next workbench in the hobby-room and I will use proceeds to buy the remaining cabinets and equipment... now it's just executing the plan!!! Baphomet69
I too am in a fine state... When I got back into miniatures and found Reaper...I bought one of every mini from #2000 to nearly #3100. Plus all but about 2 of the dragon boxed sets, and all the Necropolis sets and individuals. I also bought all the Shadowrun figures I could get my hands on from Ral Partha/IWM, some of the DarkSword ladies...a bunch of figures from GZG and many (MANY) of their space ships. Oh, and most of the Star Fleet Commander line of ships as well (at least I got a few of those painted before I had to pack up my hobby stuff for relatives visiting from Scotland last month...). I too have the phobia/excuse that I have to buy it NOW before it becomes unavailable. Whatever it is, as long as it looks cool or I might have a use for it if I can ever find a gaming group near me (for any of the games I like). Not only that, I keep putting off really getting into painting them up, I think I'm subconsiously waiting until I get better at painting before I start painting... Hey, I never claimed it was logical... And I'm still looking at more daily. I came this close to dropping $200 on Heresy minis the other day... So, shall we have the first meeting of Pewter Collectors Anonymous at RCon in '08?
eastman
I think you just want to melt them down to keep the lesser painters (like me) from buying them, painting them and then trying to sell them as "painted minis bought from Anne" With the exception of the 2 new dragons I brought back from GenCon (since DarkSword did most of the paying), I'm now limiting my minis buying to to 1 bought for each one painted. Of course that is 1 kilo of minis per mini painted, but it is still 1:1.
Jubilee
I know when we decide to move again some day, I'm going to have to do some serious culling of my collection of pewter! It's to the point where it makes me think two or three times before I buy another mini (and I'm working on stopping my habit of buying two of everything - one for me and one for ebay - because anything I paint for ebay I never feel like painting again for myself anyway!). I have two warhammer fantasy armies in boxes that I've assembled maybe 5 models from each.. I am never going to play warhammer, much less paint a whole army.. But I just can't bring myself to get rid of it (and goblins, orcs, and dark elves do offer up useful bits for converting now and again..). OTOH, I have far fewer armies than my husband, so I'm okay on that score.. right.. ? /ali
MiniWargamer
I think you all are worrying too much. I am getting rid of some of my miniatures but it's because I'm 54 and trying to decide how many painting years I have left! That's sobering.... Spike
Without going into details.. Steve and I have both guaranteed our own immortality. We can't go yet..we've still got minis to paint.
Artists Wren Posted August 24, 2007 Artists Share Posted August 24, 2007 I'm on the fence about whether I've reached the point of needing to seriously cull. Of course I get distracted from making that decision as our whole house is a disaster of geek collecting fervour, from decades old RPGs, to 200+ board games (one of the current collections and not solely in my power to prune, or prune I would, there's some crap in there...), to the mountains of books you'll get when two avid readers of slightly different tastes marry, not to mention a somewhat ridiculous number of DVDs. (We did at least get around to unloading duplicate books and RPGs.) The down side of owning a home and not moving every few years is losing the kick in the butt of moving pushing you to throw stuff out you don't care enough to box up, move and uncrate. I have about half a room for paint stuff, the other half going to cat related stuff, my husband's clothes and a couple of pieces of miscellaneous furniture. We tidied it recently, but it's still pretty unworkable because there's just no place to put stuff. The minis I sorted and put into plastic storage bins by manufacturer. (The under the bed size bins, not the three foot tall bins!) I had four bins and a tiny one before we left for GenCon - one really crammed full Dark Heaven, one Warlord, one Dark Sword and Thunderbolt, one miscellaneous and the tiny one is Ral Partha/IWM. Plus a few small containers of minis I unblistered before I decided that was a bad plan. Familiars (sorted by animal type) and scenery items have their own small boxes for easy access when contemplating bases and dioramas. I brought back almost another bin's worth from GenCon, though a lot of that was Dark Sword prize swag. I don't have another bin, so I'm not sure what my plan is. (Or my plan from getting the bins out of the hallway some year...) There is some stuff that I bought early on that I don't much care for anymore I should probably get rid of, and some other stuff that's old or weird that I was given that I should also get rid of, but I think at least 3/4 of what I have I still want to keep right now. Of my stuff, anyway. We've also inherited the full game collection of a friend who decided to get REALLY drastic with his storage issues. The board games will easily find a home, but knowing the people in my game group, I suspect we'll be left with the two crates of mini stuff, almost all of which is unblistered and old enough to be unknown to me. There may be GW stuff in there that's worth a packet and I'd have no clue. I figure one day I'll sit down and puzzle out Ebay auctioning and give half the money to his favourite charity and the other half to the buy our game group more chairs charity. And then I'll clean and organize the rest of the house. Right after I've cured cancer and solved the Middle East issue...

Artists Wren Posted August 24, 2007 Artists Share Posted August 24, 2007 lol, it's sort of comforting to know I'm not alone. We have a dog also, he just doesn't have any stuff in that particular room.
Enchantra
Not sure I'm at that point yet where I need to cull minis. I haven't purchased a mini since R-con 2006. I do however have a shoebox sized sterilite container filled with minis on bases that are primed and waiting for paint and then I have a whole tackle box filled with my painting supplies and even more minis and bits from the Boneyard at R-con. Add in my Young Minitures 90mm Viking I'm putting together, and I have at least a small "Shelf of shame." However I don't think I'm near the stage of having to cull the herd so to speak. alchemist
The horde of minis occupying my home still allow me a small amount of space to live in. They cut me some slack as long as I continue painting a few of them. But if they expand much further they may be forced to evict me.

That's not so bad, My Protectorate army once threatened to light me on fire if they had to go into battle again with an unpainted Warcaster. Sheesh, they can be a rough bunch. Cerridwyn1st
Anne: If you're going to get rid of the Traveling Elf from Iron Mountain that was the special Origins piece a couple of years ago, let me know. I'll take her off your hands. By the way, guys, I have a three bedroom house and one entire bedroom is dedicated to miniatures and all the related dreck: paints, flocking, tools, photo equipment, terrain, terrain tools and materials, bla bla bla. You get the idea. The room also has a large desk and computer. I've had two friends report that their collections of board games and gaming supplies has caused their landlords to need to tear out the floors and install additional support because they were sagging. I guess as long as I don't have so much stuff that it warps my floors I'm doing OK. Mel Edited August 24, 2007 by Cerridwyn1st
tanker22
I havn't done any serious gaming in about 1 1/2yrs but yet I still have a big LOTR orc army that I havn't touched in about 2yrs, managed to sell off about half to anouther guy that hardly plays, A huge viking army for chainmail and now I'm buying 15mm Franco-Prussian mini's and havn't even played it yet but they look cool. That's not counting all the 54mm + mini's that are sitting around and still buying more! Guess I'm a glutton for punishment. Waiting on a order for a 54, 75 and 80mm right now(two are nekkid girls of course ) Those three set me back $147, I need to find a cheaper hobby. Dont think I'll ever get to the point when I think I have to much, there's always something else cool I find to buy and paint. Just have to find a bigger house with more storage space
Rastl
I am strict in making sure my minis and their accessory equipment stay in one room. STAY! That's considered my 'craft room' (formerly known as the sewing room when I only had that as a hobby) and everything related to my hobbies has to stay in there. STAY!! We do get to put the few number of RPG books we use in the office bookcases but those are books so they have a slightly different classification. The older RPG books are on one of the upstairs bookshelves, out of the way. But having to collect things up and put them into the craft room keeps me from going too nutso with acquiring new things. As it is I need to sort and organize in there because it is getting to where I can't do the hobby because the hobby stuff is in the way. STAY!! I was (briefly) on a kick to get a playable army from every Warlord faction. That ended at ReaperCon this year when I had to answer the question of "Why?" I didn't have an answer, so I was able to let that little obsession go. And then I was overwhelmed with Necro minis so I have enough short term goals to prevent me from looking to buy armies from people getting out of the hobby. STAY!!! Now my hobby money is being mostly saved up to get carry cases for all the army minis I've been painting. They're going to need to be stored so I might as well store them in something useful. STAY DAMMIT!!! So, anyone know anyone looking for some MageKnight figs? I picked up a boxful on a whim and that whim has passed.
