Well, here's the mini I painted for Evilbob. She got her at GenCon, but I just got around to downloading the pics off of my camera.

She's a bit shiney because my matte coat is not very matte... but it works for most of my stuff - since I typically do stuff for the gaming table as opposed to display. Any comments/critiques are welcome.

Aphrella, this is a pretty good attempt. There are some things that I think you can work on that would make future minis look great!

First, definitely reduce the number of colors used in a mini. Right now you've got too many at play and all you're noticing is color, not necessarily the paint job. I usually keep it to two main colors on a mini plus you have a skin tone, hair color and miscellaneous straps, bags, etc. For the most part though you want two maybe three main colors to catch the eye and everything else should be more neutral.

Second, looks like your paints maybe going on too thick (or it could be too much varnish?). Try watering it down a bit to create smoother looking basecoats.

Third, add some highlights. Don't be afraid to do it. It will give the mini a lot more depth and can make things look really sharp on a gaming table even if it doesn't look that great up close.

Well, that's enough for now. Always strive to get better and don't be afraid to try new techniques! If you have any questions feel free to ask any of us. If you want some suggestions on how to improve future projects just let us know. We're here to aid any way that we can! ::D:

She certainly is colourful. It's hard not to want to try out all of the different paints, but sometimes there can be too much of a good thing.

You seem to be off to a good start where eyes are concerned. I still haven't gotten the hang of doing eyes..or darklining, which I see you have also begun experimenting with.

I'd have to agree with Meg: the paint is too thick and there are too many colors. If a matte sealer comes out shiny like this, it is most likely overspray. A couple light dustings of matte sealer works better than one heavy one. Krylon Matte in particular will be very shiny if oversprayed.

Try starting with a darker base coat for your skin tones and then working up a couple of highlights. As nice as your eyes are on this piece, you've got the brush control to do some highlighting, just need to give it a try.

believe it or not, there really are some highlights on her.... that shine makes them hard to see though.

As I said, I don't do many display pieces, so I don't worry about the shine too much (I'm using Plaid's matte sealer that I got at the local craft shop, because my local hobbie shop is VERY thin on painting supplies - I'm lucky I can get minis there sometimes  )

Ah, the sealer problem makes sense now. Thin your sealer just a bit with water and apply two thin coats. The end result will be less shiny.

Even if you don't paint display minis, a little shading and highlighting will make the mini easier to identify on the tabletop. It doesn't have to be fancy. Base coat, wash, then drybrush, just like they would show you in Paint and Take.
