kristof65
I merely see this as an attack on a person that many see as pretty, by many who don't feel they are pretty.'Ha, Ha, Ha. She may be pretty, but I'm smarter." Petty jealousy and insecurity. Nothing more. Actually, I was thinking "at least she's pretty - that gives her something to work with." Have you ever seen some of the people that are on Leno's Jaywalking? Very few of them are pretty, and they get ridiculed just as much. And some of them continue to come back for more. All in all, its really a reflection of the sad state of education in the US, not really the poor Miss South Carolina Teen USA. Look at the question she flubbed up - it was about Geography and how many US citizens can't locate the US on a map. I've been disgusted By the Miss USA ever since I found out that single moms couldn't enter, which I find to be a travesty, as single moms trying to work and raise their kids right are awe inspiring, and far better role models than insipid college girls without troubles or character building events in their past.To me, that's the epitome of the USA, a working single mom, trying hard to raise her kids, working/going to school and making it. While I too admire someone who can raise a child alone, most (not all, but most) single moms who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements of the pageants became a single mom by making a pretty huge mistake. One that the pageants themselves don't want to glorify. I see what you're saying about those women who have overcome their mistake (or the very few who don't consider it a mistake and actually wanted a child out of wedlock that young) - they can be awe-inspiring. But as the pageant organizers, do you really want the women you're promoting as role-models to also be single parents? Because you know as well as I do that there are a ton of teenage girls out there who manage to get themselves knocked up who would point to a Miss Universe and say - "but she's a single mom." Note, too, that the rules don't allow any woman who is married or has been previously married either - and they require the winners to stay single for their entire reign, too. Maps, we don need no steenkeen maps, you just cross that big river and there you are. Who the heck are any of these pageant girls a role model for? Maybe other pageant girls, but as far as I can tell, far more teenage girls know the names of Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Brittney Spears, Lindsey Lohan and Christina Aguilara than the winner of the Miss Teen USA, the Miss USA, or the Miss Universe. Like I said before, the pageants themselves are struggling for sponsors as their TV ratings are horrible and going down every year.
slidedog
This could accidentally be a new marketing direction for the pageants, you may get more people watching to see the next train (or brain?) wreck. With the popularity of "reality" shows, which seem to be about showing the worst side of people in many cases, I wouldn't be surprised if watchers enjoyed the embarrassing moments. Kheprera
The real tradgedy is the number of girls who are forced into the pagent lifestyle by over-achieving moms. Jon-Bonet Ramsey is just one example of that. If you've seen pictures of her in her "pagent clothes" you know what I mean. No six year old should be dressed up to look like a streetwalker. At that age, also, they are trying to please their parents, hoping that if they perform well they have "earned" their parent's love. When I was competitively ice skating as a child, I saw the kind of parents some of those kids had. Belittled and badgered for not performing as well as the medalists, for falling during a routine, or, in one case I saw, for forgetting the routine due to nerves (caused by the harrassing parent), these children are being used by the parents to achieve something they couldn't do when they were younger. It's that memory that sparked my reconsideration for Miss Upton. Not knowing what her mother or father might be like, her nerves could have been well shot due to them pushing her too hard to be "perfect." As for the pagents themselves, I've never been a fan. Everyone always seemed fake to me. It also seems to me like some of the girls seem to get through life on their looks. Truthfully, I'd hate to see them without the makeup and mounds of tape they use to hold everything up and in place.

Those parents exist in just about every child's activity there is. I saw them when I played soccer (my Dad could start to get that way, but then he'd realize what he was doing and apologize), and later on when I coached Little League Baseball. And it's not just parents, either - grandparents can be equally guilty. In the little league team, the other coach and I actually had to tell our star player's granddad to shut up and leave the kid alone during one game. Never saw the granddad at a game after that, and the kid was a lot happier (and better) player because of it. The pageants for the young kids, like Jon-Bonet - those creep me out. EntilZha
Yeah she was just really caught up in the moment... and when it started bad it snowballed from there..She's really not dumb. but look at the video she is a deer in headlights...... I maintain that she... Is dumber than a bag full of hammers Couldn't outwit a staple gun Has the mental agility of a rabbit dropping To quote Vaarsuvius from "Order of the Stick", has a mental acuity that would be compared unfavorably to that of a table. What did Mr. Spock say when he did the Vulcan Mind Meld on Miss Teen South Carolina? "Space: The Final Frontier"

What did Mr. Spock say when he did the Vulcan Mind Meld on Miss Teen South Carolina? "Space: The Final Frontier" And still I maintain that it doesn't matter, that you are merely pointing out her perceived inferiorities to make yourself feel superior. Don't take this the wrong way, but dude, you, a 37 year old man, are quoting Order of the Stick and Star Trek to demean a seventeen year old girl, whom you have never met. You are making fun of someone you perceive as weaker in some sense. Someone who has never done a thing to you. Seriously, step back and take a look at what's wrong with this picture. Step back in time to when you were in high school and older people picked on your perceived weaknesses. It wasn't cool when it happened to you. Were they any better than you? Are you being any better than they? Even if she is "as dumb as a bag of hammers" does it really need to be pointed out with such glee and savagery? It's like monkeys flinging crap, man. We're no more superior than the monkeys because we do the same thing.

Cadaver
Dude, you're taking this way too seriously. We're "pointing out her perceived inferiorities" because it's funny as hell. Some are, and hey, even she laughed at herself, but go back and read some of the comments and some of the comments on the news sites, and on the youtube video, there is a lot of venom in some of them. Why? Why did this make the news? Why is this girl getting more attention than the actual winner? Why is this funny? Put yourself in her shoes, (although high heels probably aren't your style) how funny would you think it was at seventeen if you brain farted, which I'm willing to say we've all done, it was put on camera, replayed, and pointed out by the news agencies, put on the internet, etc. etc. What if complete strangers, people that don't know you at all were condemning you and calling you an idiot, moron, etc. Would it be funny to you? All I'm saying is I'm seeing a lot of glee in pointing fingers and laughing at someone for what she is and represents rather than for who she really is. A teenage girl. Had this been a regular teenager caught on camera there would be no story. Everyone would've rolled their eyes and maybe muttered under their breath, but that is it. This is not the first time I've seen this. Shannon Stewart, Playboy Playmate and all around hottie, used to be friends with my little sister. She would come over to the house to give my sister a ride to school almost every morning. Now I was away in the Navy, so I only talked to her a few times when I was down, but her family and my family were pretty tight. All the times I talked to her she was a very lovely, very sweet girl, who had great conversation skills. My family loved her. However, as soon as you talk to anyone who went to school with her she was a stuck-up snobby woof. Stupid, an airhead, A slut, blah, blah, blah, etc. etc. 9 out of the 10 people who talked about her never spoke a word to her, almost every thing that was said about her was based on her looks, either due to intimidation or jealousy. Any inane comment she made would be instantly pointed at as her being an idiot, when in fact, she was just a teenage girl.
eastman
Heck, maybe that's the reason intelligent life hasn't contacted us - they're offended by our assumption. Personally, I prefer Miss Terra Firma, then when we colonize Mars we can go to Miss Sol. I think Miss Terra Firma is one of the strippers here in Chicago Don't get me wrong, I hate these pageants.I've been disgusted By the Miss USA ever since I found out that single moms couldn't enter, which I find to be a travesty, as single moms trying to work and raise their kids right are awe inspiring, and far better role models than insipid college girls without troubles or character building events in their past. You could start your own pageant, the Miss MILF contest

Of course I haven't said anything that probably half the morning radio show hosts in this country haven't said in one form or another. Are they all jealous of her, too? How about asking them the same questions? If I came across sounding as vacuous as Miss South Carolina, I'd be surprised if I didn't get ragged on in some fashion. You said it yourself, she laughed at herself and I imagine I would too, just let everybody have some laughs at a display of rampant inanity and then let's move on, ok?
