Looking cool so far.

Question - Are you doing OSL on this piece, or are you working from one side to the other?

Working from one side to the other, currently. As I often don't have the energy to do more than one hour of painting per day outside of work, breaking it up like this is one way to still get my "yays, I finished a part!" dose even when I don't paint for very long. :;): I *am* considering OSL as the basing/setting develops in my head, but I have not decided for sure yet. ::): In my mind OSL lava is pretty much "been there, done that" on so many pieces by so many people that I would almost prefer to do something a little more unusual...I'm still debating. ::):

Upon seeing the color you used for your base, I thought that you were going to do a very dark, blue-black skin (not drow, more African). Boy, was I shocked to see the bronzes! I love the contrast, though. Personally, I would tone down the arm musculature a bit, but that's just me. As you said, depends on how stylized the rest gets. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with the gems!

So, one question - is she going to be a redhead? ::P:

Yes, of course she's going to be a redhead! She's a fire giant! ::D: The precise color of red is yet to be determined, as I am ruminating over her armor and such in my head right now. ::):

The weave of the muscles in the shoulder..... Is that how they are sculpted or are you painting them in?

The muscles are sculpted as all ropy like that, in accordance with the Wayne Reynolds artwork she's based on I believe--he tends to over-exaggerate musculature 'till it's waaaaayyy over the top. But yeah, as I painted the arm musculature it went very stylized...it will get glazed down just a little probably, but I'm not sure. I kinda like the effect, but it can be over-done...it's one of those things the jury is currently out on. I'll probably try a different technique on her other arm and then decide which I like more!!!

Out of curiousity, what is the size category of this particular fig? If she's bigger than the usual Reaper fig, I might consider trying to paint one too - as practice to learning how to highlight and do all the stuff you mention (glaze, etc).

Oh, and is it possible to buy the "Learning to Paint" instruction cards/booklets on their own?

Nope on the LTPK instructions. They come with the kits and that's it. However, we are currently re-doing the early kits with better, expanded instructions and we're going to be charging less for them, so it's more economical to pick up the kit if you want the instructions (and you don't end up with a load of extra paint you didn't need).

Back on-topic, this model is a 28mm giant, which means she's twice the height of a standard Reaper fig...at least...I think she's close to 60mm. I'll post a pic with her next to a standard Reaper mini next time I pop up pictures. ::):
