Rigged4mini: You may find this difficult to understand at first, so I ask that you give it some consideration: Every person on this planet has different strengths; perhaps you are a natural at painting, many others are not. Personally I do not think 4 hours is enough time to paint this miniature as you state (at least not well), if you are capable of doing so that is great! Just don't assume everyone can do it.

Regards,

wg

I edited my post a few times with responses. The person who posted this has 3k posts so I will back off with my suggestions as anything I say the poster should have read on a forum or two by now. I personally believe that "gentle critiques welcomed" are for people who just started on their first mini or are new to the hobby.. It sounds like the person cares more about getting good feedback on a bad job..then getting honest feedback at all.

I apologize and will not post further on this topic, nor will I post my opinions on the poster's future works.

As a little bit of an explanation. Spike is a long time (and much loved) board member. She has always loved the orcs, but been intimidated by the thought of painting them. Her husband, Steven, is from the school of the 7 minute orc. Yes, you read that right, no, I didn't mistype. FINALLY, after having attended every reapercon since the first, she got up the gumption to paint her own orcs. All she was looking for was confirmation that she is indeed improving-which she is. She's not attempting to get to Jen Haley level with her orcs, she just wants them painted for her gaming table (and her webcomic). When I get on and say "please critique" (which I don't, I just say "here you go, now you know what I'm doing" I get my critiques from people who don't need to critique my photo skills while critiquing my mini) go ahead and give me an assessment of what I'm doing. But with Spike, maybe a gentle, "well, I can see the improvement in the lining" or "the face looks more refined" is a good bet. If you want to critique, next time say something like, "I suggest that you concentrate on the spear next time and seeing if you can get the woodgrain to come out" that would be a gentle critique. You're pointing out something she could work on while not crashing her hopes of improving as a mini painter. And the idea of referring to anyone's age is kinda silly. I'm not a bad painter, but I'm sure there are younguns who paint better than me. Or the number of minis people have painted. I'm sure there are people out there who have painted their first mini better than my 200th. Not intending to be cruel, just giving suggestions. We want everyone on this board to feel comfortable-from Spike with her orcs, to you with your critiques.

This is kinda one of those grey area subjects.

When someone posts stuff on show off I don't htink it is there intent to have thier work ripped apart. Its more of a "hey here's my stuff what do you think?" Most of the time when you post you will know where your trouble area's are anyway. Subtle critiques are ok but the work is already done. Not much you can do about it but a half hearted attempt to fix whatever if you so choose.

The WIP is were people are looking for advise and solid critiques while they are working on a piece. They are expecting alot of input on thier work, either good or bad.

Rigged4mini -right idea but wrong execution. I'm sure you had the best intentions here at trying to give advice, just wasn't taken that way. Just put yourself in thier shoes. Maybe something like that wouldn't bother you, But I'm sure there are alot of people here that could rip into your work but don't. It's all a matter of how you go about doing it while still trying to encourage the person in question to better themselves and showing proper respect.

Just my thoughts

Well, guys, cut Rigged4Mini a little slack, too. Take a look at the models he has posted on CoolMiniOrNot. He hasn't been painting long, but he has improved dramatically in that time. He seems genuinely passionate about painting and is working hard at getting better.

Yes, his critique may seem a bit severe, but remember what he's used to. Critiques on CMON are usually not a "gentle" as we're used to here on Reaper.

So give him the benefit of the doubt with his posting, just as you would do for Spike's painting.

Rigged, if you feel inclined to give honest critique, check out my WIPs.

Spike, I see you have progressed a lot and you have come a long way in a year adding several techniques to your skill set. Having met you in RL I realize you paint for the enjoyment of painting. Please continue to enjoy your hobby and post pictures here!

I think this new one is a pretty good job. While it could no doubt be improved in some ways, there is nothing wrong with it - it is a perfectly serviceable, good-looking figure. Put it against the typical quality of painted figure - which is not what you see on these boards - and it compares very favourably.

Kay, first things first. Outstanding improvements spike. I never get to post on this forum before because I could never seem to get my intarweb to work without it crashing when I post anything on this specific forum.

Secondly..............lol....here we go. R4M, chill. You're getting worked up and everyone has not jumped your butt. In fact, we've all been really, REALLY nice about it. If you want an example of just WHY I say we're being real nice about it, just ask me about my interaction with a woman by the name of Orestae on another board. See, I had it the same way as you only one thousand percent worse. Her crew and her basically pushed me out of that forum. Not so here. Just giving you a heads up, mon'ami.

People are actually going to my gallery to give me low scores because of this...... this community is really great for improving ones painting skills.

Rigged, I hope people aren't sniping you. That would not be good. However, we are very community oriented and you did say some rather disparraging things about one of our most favoritest people on the boards! Spike is great! She is out there promoting Orcy goodness and is definitely making a name for herself. She has stated that she likes painting for the fun of it. Not necessarily to be a golden demon winner but to put some paint on some metal to make the orcy goodness shine that much more!

Please remember to play nice with others if you would like to join this community of mini painters. We try to keep cattiness and not nice remarks to a minimum (though everyone has their bad days). We are here to help one another but that means also giving constructive criticism. You need to point out what is good and what they can improve on. And you should never assume someone is a young painter and that that is the reason why they aren't painting to your standards. That's just . . . well . . . not right.

If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all . . . That's kind of the rule here.

Thanks all y'all for the compliments and suggestions. My next non-tabletop project is going to be Thelgar the Hafforc..a bit more of a challenge than poor li'l Lumps was. I'm also going to start working in earnest on learning NMM.

I personally haven't put any effort into learning NMM. I'm working more on my transitions and my blends. Once I have those down I can use the techniques on NMM.

So I'm still cheating with metallics. And I like it!

Keep us informed on how the next project is going!

The newer one shows a lot of improvement. Keep on trying new techniques, it seems the only way to learn is by doing when it comes to minis. I know I'm still a beginner in many ways, especially things like layering and NMM (which I haven't done successfully, yet). Keep it up! I think it's a good idea to keep the older one to see how far you've grown. ::):
