Golden Demon

You can always go with Chaos Slaaneshi. (Guess Jen's favorite faction...) Purple and teal works nicely for that. ::P:

When I won my first Demon in 2002 (only five years ago? seems like decades!) there was no other recognized contest in North America like it. There was even speculation that people wouldn't go for the regional Demons (Chicago was the first) and Baltimore would remain The Contest if you wanted to go up against the best.

There *are* more options these days for a painter to get recognition, happily, but I have to agree that the GD remains one of the most widely know (and still the only known in some areas). It's also the one common international award; you can tell customers in Spain or Germany that you've won some Demons, and since they have GDs as well, they have a basis for comparison.

I can only repeat some of the advice given so far: Pick something you like. Learn the fluff. Figure out what you can do that is new and creative within the boundaries and restrictions. (This is actually one of my favorite parts, since it's a creative challenge and an excellent exercise--a professional painter will almost always have to tailor his or her work to the demand. Cut your coat to the cloth!)

Probably won't win you a GD...but you could do a new Space Marines chapter with Purple and Teal color scheme...

They could be charged with cleansing and beautifying the Empire. Be like Queer Eye for the Space Guy. ::D:

Somehow though...I don't think GW would like it too much.

lol, I'd like to see that! And it brings to mind the idea that something that's memorable and likely to get photographed and talked about is probably the next best thing to winning in terms of getting a little name recognition out there.

Actually with purple and teal you will be WAY to close to the color scheme of the Tzeentch worshipping chaos marines.

Personally (opinion ahead) I would avoid those colors for regular Space Marine (end opinion).

Looks like all the advice has been covered. I will tell you to prepare yourself emotionally---if you haven't already. As a general rule, it's a very tough competition--for all the reasons mentioned. When you drop 100+ hours into a figure, and it doesn't place---it's a little disappointing.

What I will add---it seems to me the consistent winners are the painters that "have a vision" and do the most accurate job of realizing that vision---which I think is probably true of most of the contests. So, I'll reinforce---the most important thing is to be motivated/inspired by what you're painting----you'll be married to it for awhile..8)

Oh and Mel the reason I'm looking at going to Baltimore is because that is home for me. All of my family is in the area so I wouldn't have to worry about a hotel. I may think about Atlanta but I would rather go to Baltimore.

Something to think about for Atlanta---

I heard rumor at Gen Con they may not have one in Atlanta next year. The original rumors, before Atlanta started, was to swap between Dallas and Atlanta----but it's all hearsay. When they announce dates in January, it'll all be clear for 2008, I'm sure.

But, in the case they continue to have one in Atlanta----we have a "painter" get together to swap techniques and such, for about a week, at the time of the Atlanta demons. Then we go compete.

Last year, Flynn, Whiz, Darthfoley, and I painted, partied, and generally had a good time. We always try to plan something.

Also, we have a great after-party every year---where a few "invited" competitors go hang out---Grumb and Reddawn hosts it, and my wife and I help "sponsor" the drinks and such.

Anyway...Atlanta is a pretty good time for other reasons besides the competition.

Doesn't Chaos also have the Daemonettes? Now those are cool. Saint Celestine is very cool; some of the highest-priced minis ever on Ebay have been the Saint. She's a couple of years old now, so I don't know that it would go over well unless you kit-bashed in a bunch of other goodies. The Harlequin, now, that's hot. How long has that model been out?

1. Think teal and purple won't win? Then you need to check out Jennifer's first Slayer winner in 2002, which was teal and purple...her other entry that year was teal and purple also, if I remember. :;):

2. Meg, if you guys are going to GW let me know when I might want to go or might toss you money and ask you to pick up something for me if you wouldn't mind. :;):

3. Ditto on the psychological prep that Kev mentions. One of the reasons I don't do Demons anymore is that I don't want to sink 120 hours in a piece and watch one judge just not like it because it's got NMM. :;):

4. If you need a quick run-down on the fluff for any of the armies, come over and ask an Anne. I worked for 'em, I darn well was forced to recite that stuff. That may help you to choose a force to explore in more depth. ::): Once you have chosen a force, ask to borrow the army book from Zak & Anne's Exhaustive Collection of GW Paraphenalia. ::P:

I'll hijack and use this to plug the GenCon competition---as this is one of the things that I like most about it---and I'm sure it holds true for the RC as well (just knowing the folks that run it)....

The judging is done by *experienced* painters---and it's always been consistent and considers paint quality above all else--at least in my personal experience.

This doesn't necessarily hold true for every demon competition....as Anne alluded to.

yup true enough rodnik. however getting a GD is still considered to be a high honor in the painting community. I also plan on entertin gen con and am thinking of several different things to do there too. We'll see what strikes.

Yep...I still compete in the GDs as well. I wasn't tryin' to talk you out of 'em by any stretch of the imagination.

On the GenCon topic--and you're probably already are looking at this--

The mistakes I've made have been that I don't explore the synergies available between the contest the manufacturer awards. So I recommend doing this and planning your entries to leverage the highest probability of a "win". Also, GenCon hosts the Privateer Press contest---which is big money for the best in show.....so, you can leverage that as well.

For a full run in both contests---two entries per category in GC and one per category in PP---and the manufacturer awards capability---you'd definitely be setting yourself up for the full gamut of possibilities at GenCon----not to mention painting a whole sh*tload of models. :poke:

Two entries per category for GC and one per category for PP? AND entries for GW? ::o: We don't have high expectations, do we?

Still, I think it would be cool to do the Purebred Warp Wolf with tribal ritual scars. I mentioned that to one of the PP guys at Gen Con and he thought it was a cool idea that would work with the fluff.

ROFL..lord no....I was just stating the theoretical maximum...

I could paint for three years and not have enough to fill all the slots...
