keshley
1. Think teal and purple won't win? Then you need to check out Jennifer's first Slayer winner in 2002, which was teal and purple...her other entry that year was teal and purple also, if I remember. And my first slayer from GDLA 2003 was purple, highlighted to pink (the Slaanesh standard bearer). Purple rocks! 3. Ditto on the psychological prep that Kev mentions. One of the reasons I don't do Demons anymore is that I don't want to sink 120 hours in a piece and watch one judge just not like it because it's got NMM. I think that apply to all painting contests, not just Golden Demon. By entering a painting contest you're acknowledging that your entry is now under the mercy of the judges subjectiveness no matter how long you worked on it or how much effort you put into it. They were not there when you worked on it, sacrificing blood, etc, and they don't care about it. All they care is the finish product. That's why you must paint what you like so you enjoy working on it. Another suggestion for you to get familiar with GW fluff is to enter their local contest. GW usually have rogue trader painting contest or something similar. Check your local GW store for such contest. Cheers, Lili

In fact there was a period of years that Models NOT painted with NMM in the US stood very little chance of placeing. For a period of time it was a fad that was popular and liked by the judges at the time and deemed by many difficult to do. I now feel its now about 50/50 as to Metalics vs NMM as for winners at a GD. Even the European Games Days you will find a large mixture of the two styles on the winners podium. In fact pay attention to many of the French and Spanish painters as they mix the two styles. Gold NMM for golds and Metallics for silvers and steels. People need to remember, a style does not make good painting.. Good painting makes good painting no matter what style you use. Styles are fads, nothing more and nothing less. I truely feel that if you take a highly skilled painter and put them to task creating a Golden Demon entry, no matter what style they choose they can create a winning entry. Also as pointed out, to be successful with demons, you need to stay with in the GW mythos of their games.. learn your fluff as everyone has said. noctambulist
Sounds to me like the Golden Demons are a lot like the Oscars. Not necessarily an award for the best art, but a combination of art, image, and marketability. And not necessarily in that order. Meg, I've seen your talent and I know you've got the skills to win. As it is in motion pictures, there are other awards like Cannes, Sundance or the Golden Globes that are more indicative of talent. But there is no higher award than an Oscar. Know the rules of the game, and I know you can win. You go girl!
