Overall, it looks good, although it appears to me that the chin is highlighted higher than the top of the head which would be odd in most lighting. Also, the back could use some of the same treatment you gave the face.

Is it just me, or is there a hint of rust on the chainmail?

What is the snow?

Hey, don't get catty! Not everyone is the same, you know, and you won't help your cause by antagonizing people who have nothing against you.

Nice model, especially the chail mail. The axe-head is interesting. Are you intending it to look like napped bone or flint? You made very effective use of the snow on the base, by putting it in spots rather than spreading it all over the base.

In your CMON comments you noted it is hard to get the reds matte after you paint. Reds are pretty bad for getting the shines when you layer them. There are two things that will help this. One is to add matte medium or matte varnish (Vallejo or Reaper would be good) to your paint. The other is to use a paint-on matte sealer. I believe the liquid Dull Cote is intened more for airbrush, so it may not do what you want.

Micro Flat from the same people who make the decal setting solution might work better for you. Thin it a bit first. DON'T use this product in your paint.

The good... the gem on the bracer is excellent. It "pops" quite nicely. I also like the wood grain on the weapon handle. For the most part, I also like the snow on the base.

The bad... the chainmail looks kinda... blah. I suspect it is due to a deficiency of the sculpt as much as how it was painted, but the chains just kinda seem to run together. Perhaps a wash would have helped, followed by picking some of the highlights back out afterwards? The fur is also kinda bland... a little less uniform coloring might have helped it to look more natural.

The ugly... it's an orc! :;):

And finally, a suggestion. I've read the thread that you alluded to in your post here, and chose not to comment there. However, you've carried a chip on your shoulder over into this thread, so now I'll say something. Lose it. There are a whole bunch of people who haven't read (nor even care) what was said there. Continuing the remarks here only serves to make you look foolish. I hope that you are able to get past that, get some perspective about what was said on both sides, and move on. It would be a shame to alienate yourself from a forum full of generous and helpful people.

Can't say I agree about the chain mail. I like the way that the shadows get more recessed around the shoulder strap, as if it is pressing the mail against his body and creating a shadow. A wash and a little more pop is a good idea, but there is still some good stuff with what he's done.

On the animal pelt, I'd have to agree. On the outer edges of the pelt, where it would be the belly of the animal, he could paint off-white and shade towards the center. Have the center be darker, like the dark fur that runs along the spine of an animal like a wolf.

I'm going to give the chainmail another wash of brown and black as I noticed it looks to clean in some areas.. I wanted a very dirty and grimy look to the chainmail as an orc would never polish and clean it..

I used Testors Dullcote which is a spray for the matte finish which for some reason does not work well on reds and blacks. I then tried using a brush-on matte finish by Floquil and I think the testors I used earlier made it ineffective.

Once again.. I forgot that adding any kind of matte finish will wash out highlights so I still need to be brave and additional additional highlights that will dissappear after the matte coat is applied.

Think you did a good job on it. Cant see much that I don't care for. Always liked the dirty nasty look on stuff like this. Also liked the base on it.

I used to darken up my LoTR orcs and urik's so much They looked like a walking rusty mud ball. Gave a cool effect on the table but not much for a display piece.

Your skin looks fine but something I used to do alot of times just to give orcs a different look was mix in some flesh, browns and reds just to get away from the typical orc green look. Came out pretty cool I thought.

Just something to play around with if you wanted to.

Overall, it's a really nice looking orc. The things that I notice most that need some more work are:

Skin: The highlights need to be brought up a little more in general up to the chin's highlights at least, in particular you need to even out the skin some on the back of the shield bearing arm.

Chainmail: The wash doesn't appear to have gone on evenly, take a little more time when washing to get even coverage.

Furry Shorts: Washes are great for getting the recesses of fur but a couple of successively brighter drybrushes or some layered highlights paired with glazes would make the fur that much better.

Bracer gem: While it's a really well executed gem effect, the position of his arm means that you needed to shift the highlights and coloration so that it's parallel to the ground rather than perpendicular as they are now (the gem is a domed oval, thus subject to the light source).

What I particularly like is how you've emphasized the points of the pickaxe rather than gone with the usual, highlights on top, shading on the bottom approach to painting picks. The tips are going to be sharper, more polished because that's what see's use.

To be honest tho... this one is not as good as your other minis.. Did you rush yourself? Don't. I've seen what you do when you take your time, and you should always try to do your best.

If it seems like I'm picking apart your mini, I apologize.

No need to apologize. I'm glad you were able to list the wrongs with my mini. Its unfortunate you could no do the same with Spike's which could benefit her just like this will benefit me. I've also taken the time to search your wips and you definitely have alot of talent. I wish I could paint as well as you.

i like him alot. The only two things that really seem "off" are his chin, which is a tad bright, and the NMM on his pick make it appear kind of bent.

I LOVE the base! It makes sense that a black orc warrior should be standing in snow. I'd like to see a closer-up closeup of your shield too. I painted him last winter and had alot of fun doing the shield.

Good choice of sculpts BTW.
