Very sad today

This morning, while trying to put my dog on a leash so she could go out while I got dressed, she got away from me. After a couple of failed attempts to call her back in the house, I turned to go in. I heard a sickening thud and my dog starting to yelp. When I ran to her, she couldn't move her back legs.

A visit to the vet confirmed the worst. Her back was broken. The break was such that even with immediate surgery, her chances for recovery were slim. Given she was an active, spirited little dog, I couldn't see her enjoying live as a parapeligic. I had her put to sleep earlier today. I stayed with her at the vet's until she passed. She was a brave little fighter, right to the end.

I miss my dog terribly already. I'm sure eventually I will feel better, but right now this is very painful.

Thank you. I would probably adopt an adult dog, like I did with Robin. They can be harder to place than puppies, since everyone has that "aw, cute" response. Robin was already houseboken when I got her and integrated easily into the rest of the family.

I have a friend who works with Welsh Terrier rescue. I may either get a dog through him or a rescue through the Patterdale Terrier association.

Sorry to hear about that.. and I really feel you pain. I had to take our Bassett to the vet after a fall coming into the house which caused him to mess up his back.. I have never felt so helpless in my entire life as I did that day.. That was 2 years ago and I still see it like it was yesterday.. we now have 2 Bassetts and both of them are good dogs but they are not my Sebastian ...

I would echo the adult dog post, Freckles our oldest now was almost 2 when we got her and she is much easier to live with at times that Cooper our puppy that just turned 5 months..

I"m so sorry to hear about your loss. Sometimes doing what is merciful can be awfully painful at the time. I recently went through something of a similar nature with one of our kittens.

Give yourself time to heal, and then you might find a new friend at a shelter or rescue center.
