Carrying your paints

Recommended Posts

For those of you who paint at work or travel a lot (like to conventions), what do you put your paints and brushes in to get them from point A to point B?

ATM I have a mixture of Reaper, GW, Tamiya, Cheapie Wallyworld and Vallejo paints though I am slowly making the switch to all Vallejo.

Also, what do you keep the minis in to  keep the paint from getting scrapped off?

My Mobile Paint Unit One is a huge Plano tacklebox from Bass Pro that stores paints, brushes, additives, primer, dullcote, tools, putty, and four trays of minis...tends to weigh out at twenty to thirty pounds fully loaded.  :)

Mobile Paint Unit Two (the abridged one) is my paint spinner inside a custom paint spinner cozy/carrying case my mom sewed for me and a small tacklebox/tray that carries my brushes and a few minis.  Additives and the small tray I usually stick in my backpack if I'm travelling light with Unit Two.  Paint water container also resides in the backpack.  I don't carry a purse so the backpack is almost always with me on my travels, even if I'm lugging around Unit One.  :)

I don't have a permanent set-up at the house, so I always have mine in a "mobile box" well boxes.

All of my paints are in one of those plano tackleboxes like Anne mentioned.  The one I use has those clear slide-in boxes that are the right height for Reaper, Tamiya, and GW paints.  Then there's some storage in the top that holds Gladware containers with flocking materials, minis in need of paint, and other random ideas.

Box number two is also a tackle box, but in the top it holds my spray cans of primer and sealant and in all of the sliding drawer with storage of all sizes, I keep brushes, glue, Art Deco paints, plastic bags, brush cleaners, basically everything else that is needed.

One hint though when shopping for a tackle box.  Pocket one of your paint pots to ensure that drawers will slide in or lids will close or you will just have bought your father in law a new tackle box for all of his fishing needs.  Hope my rambling has helped.

Wumby's got it in one, also bring along a brush so you can make sure that there's somewhere that will fit them...for that matter, any weirdly-shaped thing that you for-sure want to fit in the paintbox, you should bring.  I got such funny looks from the Bass Pro personel when I dragged a bunch of painting stuff into their store and started stuffing it into tackleboxes...

In the past I've used a toothbrush holder to transport brushes.  Ya know, one of those two part cantainers that ya use when travelling, etc.  That's probably not the best way to do it, but it worked for me and I didn't (and still don't) have any super fancy $200 hair-from-a-critter-that-only-lived-for-30-minutes-in 1762 brushes.  :p
