Jubilee
Honestly, although I think the blending on the cloak is lovely and very smooth, the transitions on the dress are really harsh, or just too stylized in comparison to the cloak for me. Especially that line of pink on the inner portion of her skirt, along the front thigh - it is just much too stand-out, especially compared to the smooth transitions (and rather broad highlights as well) you have in the cloak. The two just don't fit together very well for me. The highlight on the tip of her nose looks a little wide, and makes her nose seem a bit flattened (this is something I also have trouble with). I agree that the line under her bottom looks a little bit too stark for my taste, as do the shadows in her muscles on the arm holding the sword. Lastly, the hair overall looks really nice, but the back of the hair where you've got some straight lights going across the upward sweep of the lower side of the hair looks a bit unnatural and forced 'against the sculpt.' /ali
fieldarchy
Jub, I quite agree with you. I think both areas look good separately, they are different styles for all intents and purposes. . . and on the same mini it doesn't jive all that well. It was an experiment mini on so many different levels! Just focusing on getting better as a whole.

It was an experiment mini on so many different levels! Just focusing on getting better as a whole. When I looked at the mini - my eye saw 2 types of material. The cloak looked soft and non reflective whereas the dress looked like satin or something that was very dark but reflective. I thought the only way to show different types of materials was via reflectiveness. I took this to be a conscious effort to show different materials. Probably a case of "beauty in the eye of the beholder" cuz it seemed OK to me. JJ
fieldarchy
Yeah it looks ok, but the figure as a whole doesn't 100% jive together properly. It's not a bad mini, I'm not saying I hate it. I like how it turned out but not completely happy with the end result. As Ms. Haley told me, I can do better.

JJ Ah well, part of it is surely my own preference - as you can see from my own painting, I'm more likely to go with broader highlights and smoother transitions (more gradations is maybe a better word?). This is probably why I have such a hard time with reflective materials myself. To me they read more as different "kinds" of light than materials for some reason.. and I just like the style of the cloak better than that of the dress.. ;) *shrug* /ali

How does one paint silk/satin versus cotton/linen? I know that shiny black is denoted by the Very sharp contrast and very small reflections but are there actual examples on the forums that people can think of of actual examples of shiny materials (not shiny metals)? Baphomet69
The only things I noticed that I didn't really like were the shading on the skirt, too harsh, and some of the lines on the body, but they looked more like a problem with the sculpt to me. Otherwise, she's beautiful!
fieldarchy
Thanks Bapho! Yeah she did turn out well but there are things I'm not completely satisfied with on her as well. Much better than my other attempts at her though I think. Dunno, I need to get another copy of her to paint for myself and I will probably end up converting her (no crudtastic sword). Cerridwyn1st
Hello! The mini came in the mail yesterday. She's beautiful! Now I just have to find someone to play Warlord with. I intend to user her as my Druidess. BTW, Meg, I really like the way you flocked the base. Very subtle. It looks like you took my comments about basing into consideration and created something I'd like, not just something that's pretty. Thank-you! Now I just have to get mine done. Oy. fieldarchy
YAY! I'm glad you like her. Totally use her as a druidess. It works since she has little flowers all over the place. As for the base, I just bought some stuff to experiment with and that's what I came up with. I'm glad you enjoy it though. She didn't chip any where did she? I meant to send her sooner but I can't get to the post office during the day when they are open and their kiosk was broken for quite a while. Take your time on getting the elf king done. Whenever he's done he's done Can't rush genius!
vhaidra
Against some other opinions here, I really do like the highlighting of the purple dress!!! It is only partially a little bit harsh (keep in mind how small the areas are where it is a little bit too harsh) the all over look is good and I really think that the satin look worked out well and it has to be painted right that way and if you just got that very small area for to blend from a very dark purple up to bright pink it might could happen that it looks not 100% smooth. I love the colourscheme and the cape turned out perfect, nice freehands, pretty nice face and good job at the hair. About the sword you have already said what you don't like. I have missed to look up some of your paintjobs during the last months so I cannot really compare but this here is really my favorite from all the paintjobs I have seen from you until now :-)
Stubbdog
I agree with your assessment of your sword there, but I also agree with the rest of your assessment. The figure is beautiful. The sword needs more contrast. It looks flat. My suggestion would be to go look at Vikinglodge's website and look at his recent Logrim Dwarf jobber. Not the exact same sword, but gives a great idea on how to push this one to look good.
