4th edition?? to migrate or not

I know there was a thread guessing about 4th edition a couple of months ago...

I am wondering now that a little more info is available.

What are most peoples thoughts.. Are you going to convert or stay with 3.0/3.5? Or are you like me looking for alternative gaming systems...

I currently like three.... Aces & Eights.. True 20.. and WHFRP2.

I personally am leaning towards true 20

4th edition IMOO will not be as popular as the 3rd edition.. Simply because the srd will/can change at any time..

I see it has closing the gap between thier two product lines.. in DDM and Roleplaying (ahem)

I will refrain from jumping on soap box...

Not. I'm not going to migrate. The thing that really shows WotC's mindset is the fact that with paying for your online subscription they are kind enough to allow you to play on thier virtual gaming table a total of 3 times a month. I could really go off here, so I'll just leave it with that.

No, I'll not be migrating up. In fact, I'm regressing. I finally found a local gaming group (Hoody-Hoo!) and we're going to be playing AD&D 1st Edition (my favorite!)!!

Also, we are supposed to be going to play Aces & Eights sometime down the line.

I'm not migrating. 3.5 works just fine, and I'm not buying into that trap of all new books.

Has anyone heard about compatibility? Are they just updating the three core books, so all the others are still compatible, or do they expect people to trash all their 3.5 books and get new ones?

I AM migrating. I won't use the online crap at all most likely, but, the way things seems right now: things make more "sense" to me.

I'm aware I'm in the minority, here. But yeah, just the way they're explaining things and making certain aspects more useful (specifically, the race you choose to play affecting your character throughout his/her career, rather than just attribute bonuses and maybe some darkvision @ 1st level...) is making me fairly happy.

Don't get me wrong: 3.5 is cool. And will remain cool. But, the way things with 4.0 seem to be headed are really striking a chord in me.

No plans to update. My group is currently playing a d20 Modern Urban Arcana game, and they've not even hinted that Modern will be updated anytime soon.

When we switch back to fantasy, I'm going to try and use the rule change as a good reason for my group to switch to WFRP 2nd Ed. Hey, if they're going to have to buy new books anyway, why not a system where players really only need one book? If they won't, I'll stick with 3.5 for awhile yet.

I would have looked at the previews had WotC not DITCHED my account!!!!

argh! i gotta be someone other than matsumoto!!!

My $.02: if it as dumbed down as Saga Edition SWRPG, i'll wait my sweet damn time.

if it actually improves the system, i'll go with it, but by no means jump in with both feet.

Then again, i'm still looking for an Original DnD Rules Cyclopedia for less than 30 bucks!

(that, or a complete set of original boxes for les than 40! good luck, matthew!)

me? i'm still playing L5R RPG as my primary game system...we've followers here!

I'll probably go as Paizo goes with their Pathfinder/Gamemastery line, but for the most part I'm stickin with 3.5 for awile. I might pick up the PH 4.0 book when it comes out, but may hold off on the DMG & MM for awile.

I don't mind change, just I don't know, this time around I feel like I got screwed somewhere along the line, not that someone is telling me to buy WOTC books, just I want too (well I did, curb that spending early this year) & now I feel like ehhh who gives a rat's butt what Wizo does.

As soon as I have finished running my Savage Tide campaign, I'm abandoning 3.5 for Harp or Savage Worlds. I never liked 3.x much anyway. That I only bought 2 of the 3.5 books makes me a little happier, but what to do with my 3.0's? Or my 2nd ed. Maybe it's time for me to "put away childish things"..... Nah, I'm only 44!

I'm going to wait and see what comes up before I drop more money into a new edition.

Of course, a lot also depends on what the DM's decide...

Right now I am enjoying Mutants and Masterminds, and a bunch of us have the True 20 stuff, so it wouldn't shock me if we don't kick those tires at some point.

3.5 didn't do it for me. I'm from the old school and enjoyed the days of the original AD&D. That being said, I'll borrow a copy of the new PH, maybe even play in a game using it, and take it from there. I have no interest in their online stuff.

RPG's just don't do it for me anymore. I'd really rather be playing Spinespur!!

I migrated from AD&D 2E to D&D 3.0 and was happy to do so, but I never switched to 3.5. Mind you, I run D&D 3.0 Lite -- only the first three core books, and it's a low-level message board game besides. Everyone has been at 3rd level for a couple years I think. Slowest gaming imaginable, really. I'll wait to see how 4E is received, but I'm pretty sure I'll buy the PH at least, at some time, if only to see what it's all about.

I've never played AD&D... however, I do play GURPS, and I must say the system is highly flexible and I definitely recommend for detailed character running. It's not as good for the hack'n'slash variety, but it delivers on depth for me. Gives you tools to build pretty much whatever you want. The new 4th ed. is pretty good... two books and you have all you need to run detailed campaigns.

so sorry... a bit off topic, but JMHO

As our group's DM I always have the greatist financial responsibility, and am very lucky to have players that understand that and respect my opinion on what to play. I am another with a wait and see attitude. If its enough of an improvement over 3 (never went to 3.5) I'll buy it If I think its not then I wont. Honestly I think that's the answer most open-minded gamers who are D&D fans will have. Of course my idea of improvements... less skills to worry about, less "buffing" magic, a mana system for spell casting, and ubah paladins may not make the cut. I was kidding about the pallies, or was I?!?! :poke:
