fieldarchy
how depressing . . . seriously do people need to be that petty? What do they gain from taking away someone else's holdiay cheer?

Super Administrators kit Posted November 29, 2007 Super Administrators Share Posted November 29, 2007 I was reading a blog post about a naming project Greenpeace has for a rescued whale. A number of greek, gaelic, and other fancy sounding names were being voted on, but one name, Mr. Splashy Pants, went viral and is going to be the clear winner. Never mind the fact that I think Mr. Splashy Pants is a good name for just about anyone, not only whales, but this one commenter on this blog said, "Why does the internet have to ruin everything?" Clearly this person has a very well-developed sense of self-importance and not enough of a sense of humor. And that's what strikes me as going on here. The noise in my head is more important than the noise in your head. My god is better than your god. My culture is more important that your culture, etc. It's silly. There's no way you're going to convince me that the majority population at Mo State doesn't celebrate Christmas. Rather than ruin the fun for everyone, why not add diversity to the display? Surely the "Diversity Commission" could have come up with that idea on their own. But no. They had to go and pee in the pool.
Star Drifter
I like how the last line relates "being more inclusive" with no one being allowed to enjoy themselves. That said it all to me.
fieldarchy
Yeah that's the part that irks me. One person has to ruin it for the rest by being a jerk about it. Yes, we are all different. Yes we all have different views. I'm agnostic yet I still put up a tree and celebrate Christmas. It's not about the religious meaning for me so much as the holiday spirit that everyone should be nice to each other, full of cheer, and want to help each other out and show love and compassion. Interesting how when religion enters the equation this idea of brotherly love to your fellow neighbor oft goes out the window? Just a few weeks ago I had two lovely people knock on my door asking if I was a member of a congregation. I told them I wasn't and we embarked on a lovely conversation. They wanted to know my reasoning for being agnostic. When I explained that I can't reconcile the word of God being taught in churches and the way people behaved they seemed very interested. The bible teaches a decent message; be good to one another, treat others the way you want to be treated and try to live a decent and moral life. Yet, how many times do we actually meet people who consider themselves good christians who act this way? I have yet to meet a congregation of them. So, I prefer to sit at home with my own beliefs and not sit in a pew being guilt tripped once a week. Why can't people just embrace the differences of others around them? anvil
Perhaps if they called it a "Festivus Tree"?

Rodnik
All I want is some of the spare time and money these friggin' people have... I think we all need to just show up at his house for dinner one night.....with the excuse we all want to be "included"....

Helltown
Okay... I'm not a Christmas sort of person by any stretch of the imagination but I do love me a good Christmas tree. I have a small one that's covered in cat toys in my apartment. It has twinkle lights and the base is filled with concrete so the Evil Ones can pluck toys off without knocking it over. The decorating of trees is a Solstice celebration thing that was pulled into the mainstream from paganism! Cripes... insensitive to other religions... Kheprera
And now it's going back up. Apparently, though, now it *has* to have religious symbols on it to make it more "inclusive." What was so offensive about a tree with fake icicles, ribbons, and bows and no religious symbolism at all in the first place? Egads. Get over yourselves, people. You're not that important. You're less than a microscopic dot in the grand cosmos. A decorated tree is not going to kill you, unless you're excessively allergic to the plastic it was made from. Sergeant_Crunch
Look, it's called a Christmas tree. Why? Because they are put up for Christmas. Christmas is the holiday we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, regardless of what everybody says about absorbed pagan practices, Mithraism, etc the holiday is about Jesus Christ. I bet if I went to that campus I could find symbols of other religious holidays for the sake of diversity, but being openly Christian is frowned upon. Believe what you want to believe or not believe, but don't tell me I can't put up a Christmas tree, that I have to say "Happy Holidays", or other such PC BS. I believe in Jesus Christ and I will quite happily tell everyone I know to have a Merry Christmas.
vejlin
decidedly unreligious. I couldn't care less how people chose to celebrate their religion/consumer fest/weird heathen rituals. If it's not otherwise offensive or illegal I simply don't care. And christmas trees are in no way offensive to me. Crosses or not. kristof65
Isn't it funny how if a christian complained about a Star of David, or Kwanza decorations, they'd be labeled "intolerant", racist or worse, yet it's ok for everyone else to complain about Christmas decorations? Personally, the only way I'm going to complain about a co-worker's or neighbors decorations for any holiday/celebration/etc is if they're extremely vulgar, overly pornographic, not suitable for children in an area where children may visit/see and/or if they impose upon my space - IE, nieghbors lights being too bright and shining into my window, or a co-workers christmas tree blocking access to my cubicle/office, etc. People - all people - really need to be more tolerant - the majority needs to be tolerant of the minority AND vice versa - the minority need to be tolerant of the majority. That doesn't mean they need to let themselves be trampled over, but come on - limit the crying foul to when you're really being oppressed, not over every little percieved slight!
