Hey everyone, been out of the loop a bit lately but just got this guy finished up. Started working on him awhile back when I was still doing the exchange mini for Fruggs.

Would imagine the lack of calling him Conan by the manufacturer of is due to copu right laws or something but this is him from the first movie.

Did a slight mod on him with the shield, the origonal cover art had it proped up against the standard in the back ground supporting it. I didnt like it at all. very unstable. So I want and formed the shield strap around his body and threw it on his back. Used the same bronze recipe on it that I did on Fruggs mini. I like it, different.

Still have some work to do on the base though, a little touch up to get some color back in it.

Only thing I'm not really happy with are his eyes <_< The sculpt was a bit strange, very narrow like he is sqwinting or something.

hope you enjoy it, currently working on another 54mm Andrea, its Neo from the Matrix. Of course he is called something different as well. Really cool mini, neat idea for one.

Enjoy!

Chris

Speaking of your bronze recipe, after reading this I hunted around a bit and found your exchange mini show off thread which states, "...NMM with just a little highlighting in metallics. Found the recipe on accident really. The old bronze look came from a glaze of evergreen thicket over a brown/ yellow ocher and a wash of reaper brown ink."

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Never heard of Evergreen Thicket, and can't tell how much highlighting you did with the metallics (or which metallic colors), or how much brown you added to the yellow ocher... But that is a very nice bronze look that I wouldn't mind trying out at some point if you feel like sharing your secret in a little more detail...

Arnold's Conan really was much different from R.E. Howard's original character (vulture-biting aside), but that first movie is definitely a classic.

As for this piece, there's certainly no mistaking Thulsa Doom's standard, and I do remember that helmet from the movie... I don't remember Arnie ever using an axe, but you're right - the resemblanbce is certainly there! Great job, awesome base, cool mini, though I must admit I was a bit more blown away by that exchange mini. Of course, much of that may have to do with her being a beautiful woman showing lots of leg and this guy being, well, Arnold; without some pretty radical conversion work there's really nothing you could have done about that, so don't take it too hard. You did a great job sculpting that shield strap BTW, and Wyrmgear's right - the leathers are amazing.

Great piece. It really evokes the feel of the movie. I  the bronze work!

Conan used the axe during the running battle in the boneyard with Thulsa Dune's thugs. He starts out bashing riders of of their horses and then switches weapons.

I stand corrected. Obviously, it's time for me to watch that movie again! I didn't need an excuse, but this might even justify me buying the DVD... Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks for the comments, his is abit different than my normal work I do, started branching into some historical stuff lately and TV/Movie characters as a change of pace, though I'd try something different for awhile.

WG- the first thing that poped into my mind when I saw this was of him standing there before the battle prayingto Krom,

" ..... and if you do not listen, the the hell with you!" Think this is the pose from that scene actually. Not many people can get away with telling there god to go to hell but Conan I think

Kang- Thanks for the comments on the bronze color. The evergreen thicket I used as a wash is a hobby paint by a company called Delta -creamcoat. Not even sure they are arround any more this is an old bottle I've had for quite a few years. A Forrest green would probably work ok as well. I highlighted a bit more on the exchange minis armor than this shield. I was going for a very old beat up look with it trying to stay true to the movie. As for the paint I used it was a metallic pearl by Folk Art, another hobby paint. I relly like using this as a highlight, a nice mix between a light silver and white. I tend to lean more towards metallics in my work than anythying.

As for my exact mixture of brown and yellow-ocher to get the base I couldnt answere that, I just started mixing the colors on my pallett until I got what I wanted. I used folk art paints as well on this so no dropper count with it like reaper paints, sorry. The base color was a dark yellow with just a hint of brown to it. After the wash of green I touched it up on some of the raised areas then put the reaper brown ink on. This is what really gave it the old darker look. Think I may have touched up a bit more with the green wash in some of the low areas again as well.

I just kept tweeking it until I got the results I had envisioned for it. Oh, I did go back over the raised areas just a bit with plain yellow ocher lightly after the first green wash as well as kind of a highlight I guess you could call it.

Thanks Dilvish, I was trying to stay as true to it as possible, a real challenge seeing as almost everything he wore was brown, I just had to come up with the shades and tones on it to look different and not blend in. Think I did go with more of a metallic look to the armor though. It almost appeared to be a heavey dark leather from what I could remember.

Once again, thanks for the comments everyone

Enchantra- yeah I know, <_< one profile looks alot different than the other. The expression is ok I think, probably just my painting on that side. He has a very stern tight lipped look to him that was alittle hard to capture right. Same with the eyes as I mentioned, that squinting P.Oed Arnold look to him.

Thanks Faol, glad you like him ::D:

Delta-Ceramcoat is available at most craft stores, usually for about .90-$1.50 for a 2oz. bottle. I've got a bottle of Evergreen Thicket around here somewhere - I've got about 60-something bottles of D-C paints...they're what I first used when I switched from enamels to acrylics, before I started using Reaper paints. The best part about them aside from being dirt cheap is that they've got *tons* of colors. I think I've got like twelve shades of gray and six different purples (raspberry, grape, wine, mauve, etc.), which is actually part of the reason it's taking me so long to get better at mixing colors, since I never bothered to mix colors before I started using the Reaper stuff. They're kind of on the thick side for painting minis but they work pretty good when you thin them out well. If you're looking for some oddball colors or just need a big honking jar of black for something, they're good stuff when you're on a budget.

I personally don't care much for the Folk Art stuff, it's too transparent.

Speaking of Conan, I reccomend checkling out the extended version of the film if you haven't seen it. His speech just before the boneyard battle put a very different perspective on the character.

Mad jack- Your right about the folk art paints, they are on the runny side, not my first choice of a brand but I got a bunch of them from a friend who got out of painting, free is good. Like the D-C stuff though.

Have never seen the extended version of the movie, I'll have to check it out when I get a chance , thanks

Thanks PTF, glad you like him ::D:

Did alittle more work on him with some advice from another board member, changed some of the skin tone and some work on the eyes as well trying to tighten them up.

The last two pics I was just playing around with some different lighting giving them a wierd effect, almost like a painting or something. Just thought they were kind of cool so I threw them up as well.

The skin look any better to you than the first pics, yes or no?

Thanks

Chris

The flesh is looking a lot better man.

The face looks like it is a bit tough though, well, especially when everyone is thinking Arnold and you have the pressure to try and make his face look as close to the actors as possible.

All-in-all Tanker I think you did an excellent job on him...now go paint some more scantily clad women...jeez
