tanker22
Since there was a request from PTF to stop messing with Conan and get back to the girls I figured he was right and decided to start work on this one. Nice thing is I dont evan have to have links for it this time. This is the largist piece of work I have done to date and my first resin kit as well. So far I'm very pleased, I really like the smooth texture of it,less imperfections in the casting than with white metal. The detail, even though there doesnt seem to be much is great, especially in er eyes. I intend to do her up similier to the box art is why I included it in the shot, I was kind of partial to the red hair and green outfit. Clean up on her was very eaisy as well, not much flash to remove it all and the rest I just sanded smooth. Starting with a nice warm soapy bath to get the oil off her from the casting which was ver evident on her, then a spray on gray primer, was going to go with white but decided against it becuase I'm going to go with a slightly darker tone to her skin than shown on the cover art, sorry no one runs around dressed like that and doesnt have a nice golden tan to show for it Two pics are included as well, had to include a booty shot Hope you enjoy the WIP and any comments or suggestions are welcome Thanks, Chris

Enchantra
Woohoo! I'll be watching this one. I like painting redheads, so I'll have to watch and see how you do yours.
Versutus Vulpes
I am pulling up a chair and taking notes. How 'flush' do the arms sit when you join them? And what will you use to fill the gaps if there are any? Will you do it now - or after you start painting? Thanks for WIPing this one Tank - it is appreciated. PurityThruFire
It actually looks like there are arm bands where the arms attach, I'm sure that covers for the space there. Tanker, can't wait to see how this one turns out.
Jabberwocky
I'll be following along closely as well. Get to it!
tanker22
PTF is correct, there are arm bands at the joints. All the bigger kits I've worked on seem to always do this in some way to hide the connection point, be it cloths of some type or jewery. VV- The fit was actually very snug, the softer resin allowed me to file it down very smooth on each side make a tight fit, It doesnt look like it will need much filling, a very thin watered down bit to just fill in a tad, the natural indentation on her skin from the arm bands then should look ok, natural then once I start painting it. I havent done any filling as of yet, I usally wait until I get the primer like this down then fill any if needed, helps me see them better IMO. As for what I use to fill gaps? back to my caveman style of work gain. Tub and Tile grout repair. Its water soluable, can be mixed into a very thin consistency if needed, has a quick drying time and is eaisy to smooth out with a damp brush and remove oversplash around it. Been usiing the stuff for years and its acouple bucks for a tube that lasts for ever it seems as long as its capped properly. I had to leave the other arm off for now because her hand rests so close to her leg it would get in the way once I started painting. As I've said before, and especially with a kit this large, a smooth base coat is needed for the oils or any imperfections at all will show up. Once I get that finished I'll just have to add the other arm on at some point and back track with it. I'm going to start on the base first, thats usally my pattern, from the ground up, am going to try a few things different this time- the Saturation, Isolation and Containment technique used by Alex Castro, our resident master here on the forum. Any questions on this will have to be refurred to his website since this will only be my interpetation of his technique, since I'm still a little unsure of it. Thanks for watching everyone but remember this is a first timer for me as well so there again any helpful suggestions are welcome, oh- one thing though, since this is a larger kit you will not see highlights " brought ot White " for the most part. IMO such a technique only looks cartoonish on this scale and is a camera trick for painting smaller minis to get the detail to stand out. This one will use natuaral lighting and shadows because of the size of her for the most part, the only place you may see some of this done is in the hair. Thank again and enjoy Chris
tanker22
Here is the first update, meant to do acouple pics on the base as I was working on it but just forgot, so here is the walk through. I started with a med brown acrylic basecoat and then switched to oils. First I mixed black and brown heavily thinned down as a wash. This actually gave it a pretty cool effect in itself. Letting that dry I started adding in the other colors thinned as well, green and green white for vegitation, Brown/ red mix for the rocks and a light brown, yellow ocher for the flat rock outcropping she is standing on. With the properties of the oils when mixing colors things started to blend smoothly, a gradualy transition from one part to the next instead of sharp lined changes. This was the effect I was hoping for, my best interpetation of the S, I and C technique. I then went back over it with another thin wash of brown/ black mix to soften it some more. Finally adding in some of the more pronounced highlights and painted the root that runs the center of the base. may go back and tweak the root some or the rock to get a little more contrast between the two. Look about the same color to me in the pics. Will be starting with a base coat of RMS tanned skin for Carina herself since I will be going for a slightly darker skin tone. John Lee
Looking good tank, looks like I'm gonna have to get out my old oil paints that I have tucked back in the workshop. That base is fantastic. John Lee
tanker22
next update to Carina. Got some of her face done and began work on her hair as well. Found it was alot eaisier to paint in the cloths and her jewlery and then do the dark lining with some RMS brown ink. As I'm sure some of you have noticed she is missing the bottom two fingers on her hand A defect in the casting I guess. Any sugestions on a fix for it? Comments welcome on her, getting to the point to begin with oils and then there isnt much I can do to make changes Thanks Chris
tabascojunkie
The 2 missing fingers aren't cast onto the staff are they?
eastman
The 2 missing fingers aren't cast onto the staff are they? Since the grip is open to hold the pole, it is likely that they broke off (happens too often with resin).
PurityThruFire
She's looking good Tank. That stinks about the fingers, you're probably going to have to do your best in getting some greenstuff (2 part epoxy putty) and resculpting the fingers on, that's about the best advice I could give you on that. I might also want to try and define her iris a bit more as it looks very, very light in the picture. That aside man, she really is shaping up awesome. Hope you and the family had a good new year! tanker22
No, the finges are missing from the casting, must have been an air pocket or something becuase the resin was paper thin at the point they were actually missing on her hand. Her hand is actually hollow at that point. The white is some stuff I used to fill it in to give me a base to work off of. The staff just slides inside her grip when finished Thanks PTF for the comment. The iris is a very light green, cant really see it in the pics at all I'll see what I can do about it to make it stand out abit more
fieldarchy
Hey tank lookin' good. For the eye, actually start with a dark green for the iris and then highlight it. You should be able to get the light green color but it will be ringed by a thin line of the dark green and there will be variation in the shade. It looks way cool, I've tried it before.
