I Am Legend

This is about the 5th time this particular book has been made into a movie. Any comparisons to previous incarnations (and the book!) aside, I thought this was a really good flick. Will Smith did a good job IMO, of portraying fraying sanity and stark bowel-loosening terror (didn't think he had it in him).

I also give it a "meh". I loved the book, and I couldn't fathom why they would change SO MUCH of it. The book had a real message. The movie.... not so much.

If I had never read the book, I think I would have loved the movie. It was very well shot and well acted. It's just that it had nothing to do with the book.

My only thought on leaving the theater was 'What did they do to that beautiful book'.

Heh... I went to the movie without having read the book and just like Gus postulated, absolutely loved it. My very first comic book subscriber (YAY ME!) hated it because he's read the book and couldn't understand all the changes they had made to it.

Just like with Memoirs of a Geisha however, I'm reading the book now. Vampires instead of cannibal zombies... interesting..

Loved the movie, book was only okay. ;-) I think the changes made appealed to the current audience, and I do think it was extremely well acted by Will Smith. The small touches of obsessive compulsive behavior, and his coping were nicely done. It was made to be an action /man vs monster flick, and it worked for me. If you can take away your knowledge of the book, which is NOT current, how would you feel about the movie?

The movie was pretty clearly narcissistic post-apocalyptic survival horror. As a massive fan of the Half Life computer games, that had my vote from the outset.

While I sympathise with people who loved the book, it HAS been made into a movie three or four times before. I rather imagine it'd suffer from "Wow... Vader is Luke's father in this, the fifth remake of Star Wars. Colour me stunned." I kinda thought this movie was more a parallel story than a retelling, if you know what I mean.

Having not read the book, graphic novel, or seen previous incarnations of the movie (okay saw parts of Omega man, but never watched the whole thing), I really enjoyed the movie.

My biggest complaint was that the Uber Rabies infected were clearly CGI and looked far too much alike. If they were supposed to be hairless diseased humans, they should still look different.

I really liked how Smith's character thought the infected were completely primitive and animalistic, incapable of thought, yet they seemed to use pretty good tactics, trained animals for hunting, and set up ambushes. And there was clearly a 'leader' amongst them, that did not get involved in the conflict until the very end and instead directed his minions.

The decline towards madness was pretty good too.

Dude - the Ubervirus turned ordinary humans into Super-Fast-Mega-Jumping-Battering-Ram Vampires With Ninja Powers who look like escapees from the Mummy movies and are also able to knock an SUV over with a running headbutt. The totally own the night. I'd want to be one :)

With all the predators on the island, where are all the deer comming from?

The infected seemed to hunt via scent and preferred human flesh, and were particularly keyed in on blood. Maybe the deer have avoided their notice since they sleep during the night and are really good at hiding. So long as one isn't cut, it may avoid notice.

The only non-infected predator in the movie was the small pride of lions, which presumably escaped from a zoo.

Given Smith's reaction when he saw the deer, I am wondering if they were VERY rare, which is why he was trying so hard to kill it for the fresh meat.

I dunno there was the one scene where the ubervampiremummyclones killed the deer after the dog chased it into the building.

Lions would probably need to eat quite a bit to stay alive over the course of a few years - and it looks the ninjadead need to eat as well - given that there are no people, but they send out hunting parties nightly, complete with wardogs means they must be scoring something.

And what about rats? NYC has a ton of them, and we see the can be infected? Huh?

We went to see this last night and really enjoyed it. Neither of us has read the book, though I have seen Omega Man on TV a couple of times, and this was *far* better. I thought Will Smith did a great job - he's come a looong way since Fresh Prince! As far as "empty Earth" movies go, this one is pretty good. But I have to agree about all the infected uber-zombies all looking alike and pretty obviously CG....
