Generic Data Cards

Sometimes I play a gladiator arena using a simple modification of the warlord rules. I purchased 4 DHL models that I thought looked cool and fit the feel of the 4 warlord datacards that I wanted to represent them. I found the datacards with the online search tool, print-screened each one, then put them all together on an 8x11 sheet in photoshop. Then I edited each datacard by taking out the model name, number, and faction info, and I replaced it with the name, dhl number, and "gladiator type." All in all it took me.. I dunno, 15-30 minutes, it was nearly 6 months ago. But not a long time. You could easily do that with a simpler graphical editor as well, if you don't have photoshop.

 

Just another option to throw out there.

The good thing about the old generic cards was that they were generic - customisable that is - and still adhered to the point economy of army building. Making your own cards from the bottom is easy, but finding out the point cost of the monster you created is more tricky.

 

The designers of the data cards i RC must have some way of determining the point cost of these (though a lot may be found out from play testing), and to me it's really this underlying system that would be interesting to know. The generic cards provided this to some degree, but a new and updated version would be nice.

 

Warlord is already a very user based game, with user fiction and an (somewhat) interactive process of creating the history of Taltos. The abandoning of the generic cards is not quite in this spirit.

just to be clear is it the generic cards people miss or the customization table?

 

Because the combination of the Freelance rule and the new proxy rules in effect make every card (except the handful of actual warlords) generic. In JUST the same way the old cards were generic. No difference at all. So the number of generic cards has gone up not down.

 

The upgrade table was never balanced and was never even legal for anything remotely official. And I'm pretty sure reaper isn't going to share the point calculator.

I know for me it would be the customization table, although seeing a "stripped down" version of the stat line you wanted to create was useful to gauge how over/underpowered you built your custom card.

I'm not sure I follow: why would it hurt Reaper if they shared their point calculator, if one exists? Wouldn't it be to their benefit to make it easier for players to create their own characters, or magic items, for non-official games?

Trust me, one exists. I wrote it. It's over 1000 lines of PHP code. Nearly every SA point cost is calculated based on everything about the model. It is the main proprietary thing about RAGE, and will not be shared, sorry.

I guess if people really need the generic cards this badly, they are going to have to wait until next weekend, when I release my set.

Basically what you want to do is find out what things such as a Special Ability or a Damage Track cost to add to a mini?, Right?

 

That's what we used to do around here. Matter of fact it was not that hard to break the original code..which we did, but of course since then the code has changed.

 

I guess what you need to do is make sure that all of your models used in your games are created by the same template with all upgrades and abilitites costing the same for all models. Of course your system would not be accurately compatable with WL, but the fules ought to still work as long as "you're playing on a level field".

Aahhh..I've been away from the boards for a few years; This was probably addressed during my absence... I wasn't aware it was proprietary. You guys are always so nice I forget sometimes that you have a company to run :)

Couldn't the point calculator be set up on the WL page, so that you could take an existing data card, add or remove a SA or a damage track and the mysterious calculator could work its magic and spit out a new points cost for the card? This could be set up, so that the underlying algorithms still remained a secret. This would enable me to make a data card for that lupine solitaire ninja Rackham made a model for (as an example of the limits of the data card finder - try entering 'solitaire' and 'large' base size), and use it with the ingenious WL rules.

 

It would make the fans go wild.

Bah, Ninjas are over rated. :P

 

Gus mentioned that the lupines are breaking into a mini faction, and this is coming in the near future. When that happens you'll have plenty more stats to choose from for your lupine proxy.

I'm also sure that there will be other large based models with stats that better suit your Wolfen Ninja.

 

 

As a side note, if Gus did that, I personally would reverse engineer his engine in almost no time. Then all it takes is for me to tell a few people about it and to start ranting about why ability xxxxx costs yy isn't fair.

With close to 500 stat cards and a robust search engine, we shouldn't have to hard of a time with our proxy armies.

 

Besides what we really need to focus on is getting them to make a Ninja army. One that consists of evil humans, mangy Gnolls, the occasional Oriental Demon, and lots of smoke and backstab.

Even if I was allowed to open up the point calculator, this is the biggest reason I never would. My inbox would be flooded with "you R teh Suxxors! How can you charge X for this SA but Y for this SA? U=teh dumb!"

Especially since the very next email would be telling me exactly the opposite... *shivers run down spine*

 

I dare say there isn't a person alive that has a higher number than me of: Total Games Played + Total Games Watched + Total Game Results Studied + Total Playtest Feedback Received From Players All Over The World. I am always collecting input and will be tweaking the point calculator every year to fine tune things. :poke:
