I've been working on this UltraForge resin Giant for a friend for some time now. He had primed him black, started painting him and got frustrated quickly, so he stripped him. I got him in a plastic baggie with remnants of black primer in all of the creases.

I scrubbed him thoroughly and used the brush on white primer to get started.

He's truly a giant, standing about 10.5 cm. That's just over 4 inches. The skin tone has been a real challenge. He still needs his club, (will be pinned to his right hand) and I need to finish his pants up- I haven't painted the cording keeping them up yet. The base is incomplete too.

The tattoo was done pretty quickly- I'm a fan of Japanese tattoo so it was easy to find reference I liked.

One issue at this point though- you can see in the pictures he's got a bit of shine to him- I think it's from the resin underneath. I used the anti shine additive in one of my last glazes (after these pictures were taken), and now my mini has a film all over it- like chalk! I thinned the additive way down with the paint glaze. I think I started hyperventilating when it dried and left the residue. I just couldn't believe it. I tried to wash it off, and washed some of the paint off in the process. I've since fixed some of the scrubbed off paint, reglazed and sealed it and it seemed to help a little, but he definitely needs some more work before he's done.

Anyone know why this would have happened?

Any comments/critique/ suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

~Jenna

Wow, what a brute! He looks a bit like my sister-in-law's father-in-law (the sister-in-law is my wife's sister, not my brother's wife - I don't have any brothers, and for the record, my dad barely looks like this guy at all ::D: ). The photos look awesome; very nice, smooth skintones. I have to wonder where such a big, ugly, mean-lookin' sonofagun got such a beautiful tattoo? Must have taken all of a true artist's skill to keep his needle hand from shaking in terror when working on this fella.

I'm really sorry to hear about that chalky film, but I've never worked with anti-shine additive so I'm afraid I can't help you there. It'll be a shame if you can't find some way to fix it! Sad thing is, I actually can't really make out any sort of shininess in the pix. Maybe you thinned the anti-shine too much, or not enough, or with chalky water? Tough call; just tossing out guesses here. I'd suggest a coat of gloss sealer then a coat of Dullcote or some other decent matte sealer, but you say you already sealed it and it didn't completely fix the problem; plus, I suppose that if it didn't work, it might end up just protecting the chalky film...

Worst case scenario, you could always redo the base to include a burst-open bag of chalk dust that someone just dropped on his head from a 6th storey window. OK, OK, I guess it's nothing to joke about.

Best of luck, at any rate. Hopefully we'll be seeing some chalky-free images in the Show Off section soon!

I don't even know what to say...he looks beyond awesome...really, really awesome...

I tend to never worry about "shine" until I dullcoat it at the end.

The best way I've found to fix that frosted over look is to hit the entire mini with a nice shiney glosscoat, let that dry for a day or two then go back over the mini with a dullcoat.

Couldn't tell you the science behind it but it has saved a few minis for me in my time.

Tattoo is pretty rad.

Only thing I can suggest is to give a light dull cote spray before moving on to the next phase, so when things like that happen you can dunk them quickly in pine sol and scrub it off. 5 mins soak, it will take off everything but it isn't long enough to eat through the dull cote layer. It works, as I always have happy accidents happen like that.
