tanker22
This is my latest work and one big hunk of metal This is actually one of my first true "Historicals" I've done as well. Put a standard size mini next to him to give a feeling of the scale. Also put the pic of him that came with the kit do give an idea of what I'm shooting for with this. What to keep it as historicaly correct as possible. He will have the colors and markings of the unit that actually fought there; 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot Regiment. Have most the base done, just doing some touch up and working on the ammo crate right now Thanks for any imput you might have on it. antnol
Holy crap that is huge. The base looks really good so far and almost exactly like the pic. If you can get him to look as close to the picture as the base does you are gonna nail it. Keep the wips coming. I wanna see its progress as you go. Are you gonna be using oils on this one as well? tanker22
Thanks Antnol, thats what I'm trying for at least Right now the base is all acrylics but for the fig the skin will be oils, still considering using them on the rest of the mini or not. One bad thing here is while I was working on doing the pinning for him, I wont be able to actually pin the mini to the base. His feet have the elongated metal extensions that go into hollow slots of the base, there is nothing to pin to if that makes sense. Just with the wieght of this guy I dont think he would survive shipping since he will be going on ebay when I'm done. Any suggestions? My two options where using a very strong appoxy resin that is made for holding metals and damn near unbreakable, or leaving it in two seperate peices until it arrived at its destination for who ever, if any one, buys it, to affix to the base. SaintRigger
Remember - the 24'th Regiment of Foot has green trim on their uniforms. ;) I've got a giant soft spot for the british colonials, that is a fantastic model, and I can't wait to see what you do with it. If you like it, you should check out the old Games Workshop Praetorian Guard which are heavily based on the colonial troopers. Victoria Lamb did some conversions on her praetorians to include a very familiar Michael Caine looking lad.
Kahlus
ZULU ::D: Yeah that thing is huge, I bet your gonna have fun with that.
PurityThruFire
I'm really blown away by the paint colours on the burlap bag, it looks excellent. I would add some variations to the rocks on the back of the base though. Looking forward to seeing how this guy turns out.
Enchantra
My two options where using a very strong appoxy resin that is made for holding metals and damn near unbreakable, or leaving it in two seperate peices until it arrived at its destination for who ever, if any one, buys it, to affix to the base. I would use the epoxy resin. There are two other glues you can use as well that you must allow to set for a bare minimum of 24 hours that I also use with jewelry making and leatherworking. One is called E6000, and the other is GOOP, both are by the same manufacturer and both need serious ventilation for their use as they smell! However, the E6000 was designed to be weatherproof, virtually heatproof, withstand vibration and hold anything to anything. GOOP is so similar I would say it's properties would be close as well. E6000 was designed for industrial applications, so it will take abuse well. When fully cured both are virtually indestructable. Most craft stores carry the stuff. I've even seen E6000 at Home Depot. Mad Jack
I'll second Enchantra's suggestions about the E6000 or goop...powerful stuff. Also, two things you could do would be 1. to drill diagonally up through the base and into the feet or the pegs on the feet, and insert the pins, or 2. if the pegs on the feet extend all the way through the base, glue it and then when the glue dries put some greenstuff around them.... tanker22
Got some more work done on him. This is just the base colors and started some of the detailing, you can begin to see it coming out now more than with the black primer. Finished with the ammo crate as well. MJ- Dont think pinning is going to work on his feet. The pegs dont extend all the way through but are flush with the inside. I think trying to drill up at an angle may just do more harm than good on this one. Probably just go with the epoxy rout but thanks.
dargrin
Really coming along Tank. Looking really good.
Enchantra
The one thing you have here is very clean basecoats. I always have paint slapped where I don't want it when basecoating. I can already see where you've started some work on the shading. It's coming along nicely.
Versutus Vulpes
Coming along quite nicely Tanker... Looks like he stepped right out of a Wilbur Smith novel .
olliekickflip
Two of my favorite movies are Zulu and Zulu Dawn...I am anxious to see how this one turns out!!! The base looks great especiall the bag! The dirt seems like it could use just a little more contrast but thats just personal preference. All in all an outstanding piece! a
tanker22
Thanks for all your comments thus far, hopefuly can get some more done on it today since I'm off work. Ollie- the discription to the terrain that came with the mini said the ground was all a mix of redish brown earth and yellow mealie what ever that is. I actyally put more contrast into it than the origonal photo I think but still want to try and stay close to what the terrain actually looked like. Maybe I can go back and add some more yellow/ brown into it though in patches. That might help some. Thanks VV- Wilber Smith! havnt read one of those in years. Might have to bust out an old book to get in the mood for this guy
tanker22
More work done and some detailing. Still pretty rough in a few areas so dont mind some of the neatness Think the face is coming out pretty good, has a real P.O.ed look to him. Also added a bit more color to the base as Ollie recommended thanks again for any comments and suggestions
