Ulfgrimr
Greetings all! I understand the color wheel & color theory for the most part, but I am seeking advice on a tertiary color for my unit of Khador. My main colors are Black & Red w/ some Gold/Silver in appropriate metal places. Now I do have skin tones, & browns for pouches/belts etc. but the scheme still seems a little too simple. Any suggestions on an additional color that won't dominate or take away from the stong colors I'm already using? Thanks!
Rastl
Muted green. Green is the compliment of red but if you go too strong you'll look like Christmas. Add some muted green into the figs in pouches, etc. And you're actually asking for a complimentary color. Black, gold, silver and brown are all neutrals. Doug Sundseth
You could also treat the brown as a muted orange (which it is, of course) and then use that and the red as split complements of a turquoise or other blue-green.

Browns arent always muted orange. Some of them are yellows, purples, even greens. You can actually take any color and turn it into a brown, though most of the brighter browns we minis painters tend to use end up being oranges. But "skin tones, & browns for pouches/belts etc." will nearly always be red-orange, orange, or yellow-orange. For that matter, nearly every color that would be described in ordinary conversation as "brown" will be one of those colors. For all of those plus black, red, gold (yellow to yellow-orange), and silver (gray to bluish-gray), a blue-green of some description could work well in a split-complimentary color scheme. Ulfgrimr
Nice discussion, this is what I'm looking for thanks. I'm going to tinker w/ a couple forms of Clouded sky + some earthtone greens & see where it goes.
