brushforhire
Well i finally finished the fifth and final book of the HHGTTG series. I must say, that i have a lot of mixed emotions on this one. I have always loved the books, the BBC tv series, and movie for years. When i read that last paragraph of Mostly Harmless, i was broken hearted. However it was also very apropiate way to end the series. I know he wanted to write one last one, The salmon of doubt, but never finished. It started as a dirk book, but even he said he didn't like the way Mostly Harmless ended. Anyone else read these books and have any thoughts and feelings. Easily my favorite books of all time. SaintRigger
I'm pretty much where you are. I love all the books, but the first 2 are by far my favorite. I also have very warm fuzzy feelings about the BBC TV series and loved to see the cameos by Simon Jones and Marvin in the movie (which wasn't bad, and was rather HHG'ish)
Sergeant_Crunch
Hmm, going to have to go to the book store now. I just realized that it has been at a minimum 15 years since I read Mostly Harmless and since I borrowed it from the library at the time, I don't actually own any of the books beyond the first. I honestly don't remember how any of it goes so it'll be like reading them all over again.
Bilesuck
I reread the entire series these past few months. I picked up the complete collection in one book for cheap, to read on the train to New Orleans. Third time I have bought the set, as I give it out or read it so much it falls apart. Kahlus
Never read the books, but I've seen the Old BBC program and fell in love with it straight away, the whole daftness of it all just made it something special. I felt the film was a HUGE let down on all levels, but its not the first time that a films not match up to a book or series its based on. But imo the best format I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing hitch hikers guide to the galaxy was some old cassette tapes my dad used to have. Me and my brother used to just put on those old tapes and listen to the narrator tell the story. Was simply brilliant. Though I must admit I've often wanted to read the books, just finding the time. brushforhire
i loved the movie but really was surprised how different it was from the book, but i was okay with it because Douglas adams wrote the script for the movie. Come to find out the books are different than the original radio show were also. Either way they are all great, but i think i enjoyed the books most of all. The books are so crazy. Nanite
I've got the big compendium, and I still haven't finished it. I think the big Illustrated Guide is my favorite. It's a movie that doesn't move!

Yeah, that is exactly it - it wasn't a retelling of the books or anything, but it definately had that Douglas Adams feel to it - especially that whole bureaucratic run around. You can't get the same effect with radio and film that you can get with the books - but each take the flavor of the series and run with it. Heisler
I have two sets of the books, one sits on the shelf and the other is gradually replaced as it wears out. The shelf sitters, except for Mostly Harmless, were all signed when Adams visited the University of Colorado a very long time ago. I also have a signed poster of So Long and Thanks for all the Fish and I have the two album (yes, actual vinyl records) set of the BBC radio series. I have actually never read Mostly Harmless, my ex-wife read it first and said she didn't like the way it ended so I just couldn't even make myself read it. Star Drifter
I still have my copies of the first four books from, I think, 1990. I finally bought Mostly Harmless when it was either between a $30.00 hardcover or an $18.00 paperback. (Ugh.) I don't know how many times I read the first four. I have only read Mostly Harmless once. The last time I read any of them was to distract myself on a plane when Ary and I were first together.
Super Administrators kit Posted March 18, 2008 Super Administrators Share Posted March 18, 2008 I enjoyed the first four. Hitchhiker's Guide was one of the first grown-up chapter books I ever read (I was six). The next two quickly followed. I'm something of a hopeless romantic so I really enjoyed So Long.... Mostly Harmless was a kick in the teeth. It is among my least favorite books. Note, I didn't say, "...of the series."
Enchantra
I have yet to read any of the books much less see the movie. I've always wanted to read them. I think a trip is in order to Amazon.com now. I need some minions - two of them - one to work my full-time job for me, the other my Part-time job so I can finally sit and read some books and get time to paint!
